After a fantastic and eclectic semi final in Dundee's best live venue Fat Sams on August 24th - with performances from Black Velveteens, Liquid Blue, Callel, Peski Kings, Whale Engineering, a special set from The Electrolites and Barry Greig's recitals of his self-penned poetry - this year's Best Band Competition finalists were announced.   Local Caithness band Liquid Blue has made it into the final of The Ultimate Chill Best Band Competition 2007.

Thurso Players take to the stage again later this month in what has been one of their busiest years for amateur productions.   The latest offering, 'Educating Rita', directed by Iain MacDonald, is a play for two characters and is set entirely in a lecturer's office at a Liverpool University.

Tuesday 28th August sees the start of a new season for the Thurso & Dounreay Strathspey & Reel Society.   Old and new mebers are invited to get the instruments tuned up and come along when practice starts again at the Ormlie Lodge club, Thurso.

A number of children around the County were thrilled to be awarded special framed pictures and certificates signed by the author and artist at the end of term assemblies.   The competition was to draw the best picture or write the best poem about the monster.

Thurso Players' latest production, 'Habeas Corpus', directed by John Glen, takes to the stage for a three night run starting on Tuesday 26th June.   Now, while 'Habeas Corpus' is a legal term meaning 'you must have the body' this is not a play about a trial, rather it is an early treasure from the pen of renowned playwright Alan Bennett.

Wick RBLS Pipe Band took advantage of the roadworks which caused the overnight closure of High Street outside the Pipe Band Hall to hold a practice prior to their visit to Germany.  The practice provided an unexpected treat for a large group of German tourists staying overnight in the town.

George Bain Exhibition - Swanson Gallery - 24 February to 24 March
CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF GEORGE BAIN - THE `FATHER' OF MODERN CELTIC ART Groam House, the award-winning museum in Rosemarkie, is embarking on an ambitious exhibition project as part of Highland 2007, Scotland's year of Highland Culture.  The project will focus on the outstanding work of Highland artist George Bain, who devoted much of his life to the study of the techniques of the ancient Celtic and Pictish artists.
