This weekends Scottish Concert Band Festival finals being held in Perth Concert Hall will see representation from two Wind Bands from the Highlands.   Saturdays Achieving School Band class will see Lochaber High Schools Senior Band compete against another six groups representing schools from all over Scotland.

St Fergus Gallery and the Science 03 are delighted to invite you and your friends to visit the gallery to use a microscope to get a closer look at various objects and project the images onto a big wall.  There will be a good selection of objects you can use but feel free to bring some of your own - be it feathers, sea shells or even a wing of a butterfly.

St Fergus Gallery and High Life Highland are delighted to invite you and your friends to join us at a talk by Ian Leith, based on his forthcoming book - Caithness to Patagonia: Distant Lands and Close Relations, on Friday 11th March at 6.00 p.m.   The exhibition Stories of the Strangers; running from 5th March to 9th April in St Fergus Gallery takes its inspiration from tales of emigration and the associated challenges.

MAD street dance championships February 2016
Rush.dance has just competed at MAD street dance championships in Motherwell.  Mad is always a big Scottish street dance comp with all the very best dancers from around Scotland but again our Rush.dance kids performed their way to making finals and bringing home trophies with our Advanced Duos Laya and Chloe taking the top u12 spot and our youngest of our group U8 Novice dancers taking all the top 3 places, 1st Ava, 2nd Hannah and Troy 3rd place.

The EDGE dance studio has just held its first Hip Hop Masterclass of 2016 with one of Scotland's freshest dance choreographers Divine Tasinda from Glasgow.   Over the weekend Willie Miller’s plan was to get as much experience from divine as possible, so we put on the three 1 hour dance classes to suit our juniors and senior groups that were booked onto the Masterclass.

Thurso Come Dancing
We hold classes which are aimed at introducing everyone to Ballroom and Latin dances, but also giving a bit of help to get some confidence to lead and to follow when social dancing too.   The classes are at Beginner Level but we also have a later class where the members are working on Medal routines and more advanced steps.

Makar makes way - Search for new National Poet has begun
Makar Liz Lochhead, who has been Scotlands National Poet for the last five years, ends her term today (Sunday 31st Jan 2016).   During her tenure she has undertaken more than 300 engagements, conducting workshops in schools and prisons as well as representing Scotland in the UK and beyond in venues ranging from as the Scottish Parliament to Westminster Abbey and the Bookworm Festival in China.

The Edge Dance Studio in Thurso marked its 6 month opening with showcase performance at Mount Pleasant school on the 17th of December infront of a sell out crowd.  Around 100 studio members, (kids from the age of 2 right up to adults) performed on the night, showcasing 11 different dance styles.

Rush.dance kids achieve back to back wins at two massive comps, Rush have just competed at MJN promotions Hip Hop festival in Aviemore.   Once again the Rush kids have stepped up, delivered and came home with a 25 trophy haul, winning 14 Championship titles and (Tops Off Winners) the very best Hip Hop dancers of the day in Junior and Senior sections.

Latheron based artist Magi Sinclair holds her first solo exhibition this week at North Lands Glass Gallery, Lybster, with a private viewing on Friday evening, November 20 between 6.00 and 8.00pm.   The exhibition of over 20 pieces created over the last three years is entitled Norland and focuses on the Flow Country, Whaligoe and Caithness castles.
