Highland Library submission included in Future Book

Today marks the start of Book Week Scotland which is an annual celebration of books and reading supported by Creative Scotland and SLIC. As part of the celebration a free book is collated from entries received and distributed by the Scottish Book Trust.

High Life Highland (HLH) libraries support the event and this year's theme for the book was Future and Sally Hughes a member of staff from the Fort William Library wrote and submitted a piece for inclusion during the first few weeks of lockdown earlier this year.

Sally's submission was successful and has been included in the hard copy of the book alongside other authors like Val McDermid and Abir Mukherjee.

Sally said, "I’ve run lots of Book Week Scotland events and I’ve read and enjoyed the free books distributed by the Scottish Book Trust, so I decided this year would be the year I would submit something. I was inspired to write my piece during the first weeks of lockdown, when the future was suddenly very uncertain and strange. My story, ‘There is no future’, explores what the concept of ‘future’ has meant to me and how it has changed throughout my life.

The future book will be distributed for free in Scottish libraries and has also been recorded as an audiobook which can be downloaded online.

Sally concluded, "It’s been a pleasure working with the Scottish Book Trust, who have been so enthusiastic about all the stories in the book and do so much to encourage a love of reading throughout Scotland. As an HLH library employee and a lover of libraries generally I’m thrilled that my first published piece is appearing in a book that will be distributed for free in Scottish libraries - it feels very apt."
