Thurso Come Dancing

17th February 2016

We hold classes which are aimed at introducing everyone to Ballroom and Latin dances, but also giving a bit of help to get some confidence to lead and to follow when social dancing too.

The classes are at Beginner Level but we also have a later class where the members are working on Medal routines and more advanced steps.

We started as a group of people who love the idea of being able to amble our way around the dancefloor at local events, who ended up totally hooked to Ballroom and wanting to try even more. This led to Lesley Gunn taking on the training to become a certified Ballroom teacher. She hopes to qualify in October 2016. To help with this training, she gained some funding through Spirit of Caithness with Foundation Scotland which has allowed her to run workshops in Wick Pulteney Centre in Feb 2016 to introduce ballroom dancing to more people in Caithness.

Since starting these local classes, some of our members have taken Medal tests, which started as just a bit of fun to have an aim, but they have now attained Bronze and Silver medals with high grades and very encouraging remarks from the examiner from Oxford.

Current Class times:

Thursday nights - Thurso Girl Guide Hall
7 pm to 8 pm Beginners - Basics steps in Waltz, Quickstep, Cha Cha, and Jive. Introduction to Rock n Roll and some sequence dances in Tango and Foxtrot.
7.30 pm to 8.30 pm Improvers - Building up different routines, with a few more steps and technique also picking up the sequence dances along with Rumba and Tango.
8.00pm to 9.30 pm Medal Class introduces the other Ballroom and Latin dances such as Slow Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz and Samba.

Tuesday nights - Sea Cadet Hall Thurso.
7.30 to 9.30 pm: Beginners class learning the basics in Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Samba, Tango and Rumba. Hopefully we will get you moving round the dance floor with a bit of confidence and looking like you are enjoying it! Sequence dances and Rock and Roll are also on the programme for a bit of fun too!

We have varied age groups, some couples, some ladies who come with a pal, some men and some women who come alone and we just match up who we can or they can practice themselves and then dance with the teacher. It is usually fun and not too serious and hopefully everyone goes away with a sense of achievement.

The group also arrange social dances and have attended events and dances within the Highlands and Aberdeen as group outing.
