Weekend Saxophone Course At Lyth With Carole Sutherland

Held in the stunning Lyth Arts Centre near Wick, Caithness, the Carole Sutherland Saxophone Course offers the opportunity for saxophonists of all ages and levels the chance to learn and perform with others in a supportive and relaxed environment. To attend the Course you don't have to be a whizz kid on the saxophone although some playing experience would be helpful!

The Course will begin on Friday 28th September at 8pm with a short recital given by Carole Sutherland (saxophone) and Laura Baxter (piano). The concert will be followed by drinks and a chance to meet other Course Participants. Members of the public are welcome to attend and are advised to book in advance.

Classes led by Carole, Rachel and Laura begin on Saturday morning. Participants will be put into groups with others of a similar standard so nobody feels out of their depth.
The following classes will be offered over the weekend:

Ensembles
Rehearse and perform with other saxophonists in large and small ensembles with coaching from Carole and Rachel.

Technique Clinic
Breathing, tone, articulation, vibrato... all you want to know about how to play the saxophone!

Rhythm
How to work out rhythm and transfer it from the page to your fingers!

Masterclass
Individual coaching from Carole in a group situation. Laura is available for piano accompaniment where required.

Piano Accompaniment
Working with Laura to put together music with piano accompaniment.

Courtesy of Band Supplies and Yamaha, instruments and accessories will be available to try out and buy. There will also be a selection of sheet music to add to your collection!
The weekend's activities conclude with an informal concert on Sunday 30th September at 4.30pm. The concert is free of charge and open to friends and relatives of Course

The Course fee is £90 for Participants. This includes meals and refreshments for the duration of the Course. Observers are welcome to attend for £20 per day, including meals and refreshments.

Carole Sutherland
saxophone
Since graduating from the RSAMD with BA (Hons) in 1999 Carole has enjoyed a successful career as a freelance saxophonist, appearing regularly with the BBC Scottish
Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestras of Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera. In addition to her orchestral work, Carole is an active chamber musician and has appeared with the Hebrides Ensemble and Paragon Ensemble Scotland. She is a founder member of the Auriga Ensemble which performs all over Scotland. As a soloist Carole has performed Glazunov's Saxophone Concerto on several occasions and is a popular recitalist, including a performance at the 14th World Saxophone Congress in Slovenia. Carole teaches saxophone at Napier University, Stevenson College and at RSAMD Youthworks Music (formerly known as Junior Academy). She is a tutor on the Saxophones Forward course and runs her own course every year in the Highlands of Scotland.

Rachel Drury
saxophone
Rachel Drury studied at the RSAMD and graduated with BA Hons (Musical Studies) and MMus (Performance). As a student she was a founder member of Quadrophonic II Saxophone Quartet and awarded the Governor's Chamber Music prize in 2000.
She has played with the RSNO, RSNO Big Band, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Concert Orchestra, has toured across Europe and Canada and continues to perform a wide range of music from classical to funk across Scotland.
Rachel also works extensively in the field of community music and music education devising and running various projects across the UK and Ireland. Most of her recent work has been with children with moderate and severe learning disabilities. She also lectures in Techniques of Teaching at the RSAMD and having completed an Open University Course in Child Psychology Rachel is working towards a PhD researching the impact music has on children's language development in the early years.

Laura Baxter

Laura Baxter graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2005. Having completed a BA(Hons) at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Laura entered the RAM on a scholarship and studied for a postgraduate diploma specialising in performance as a piano accompanist. She studied with Jean Hutcheson, Fali Pavri, Michael Young and Iain Ledingham, and also took part in accompaniment masterclasses with Malcolm Martineau and Julius Drake. During her time at the RAM Laura worked as a repetiteur for the Royal Academy Opera's production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" under Anthony Legge. This collaboration with the RAO resulted in Laura working with several of its students and enabled her to win the Brenda Webb award for accompanists as part of the prestigious Richard Lewis Prize. Laura was also delighted to accompany Scottish percussionist Colin Currie in his inaugural recital at the RAM.
Since graduating Laura has been living and working in Glasgow as a freelance accompanist and piano teacher, working for the RSNO choruses, the Merchant Voices, and at the RSAMD as a teacher at the Junior School. She also now teaches at Hamilton College and the High School of Glasgow, as well as performing regularly as a member of ensembles Symposia and Auriga.
