BNS Nuclear Services Ltd, in conjunction with DSRL recently held a series of safety presentations at several local primary schools with Oscar the robot.   The primary schools were invited to submit a poster based upon the theme of safety in the home with the first prize being a laptop for the school.

Philip Todd from Wick is in the running to achieve a national film award.  Philip, a former pupil of Thurso High School submitted an entry to FilmG, MG ALBA's innovative Gaelic online digital shorts competition, and has been shortlisted in the Best Performance section of the New Entrant category with a chance of winning £500.

BLAS Festival Announces 2009 Programme
The Blas Festival is set to play a role in attracting tourists to the Highlands as it launches its new programme for 2009.  Blas will deliver a series of special concerts to be played in distilleries across the region as well as performances by top music artistes such as Dougie Maclean in venues ranging from village halls to Eden Court Theatre.

BOARD APPOINTMENTS AT CREATIVE SCOTLAND
Two further non-executive directors for the company that will complete work to merge the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) and Scottish Screen (SS) into Creative Scotland - the new single national development body for arts and culture - were named today.   Chair of Creative Scotland 2009 Ltd, Ewan Brown, welcomed Dr Chris Masters CBE and Peter Cabrelli, who will join the new company's board which meets for the first time today.

Opportunity for Artists and Makers at St Fergus Gallery, Wick
The St Fergus Gallery is currently looking for Local Artists and Craft makers to submit work for display in "The Foyer" the new Local Arts Area in Wick Library.  Having recently acquired new display cabinets we now have the scope to show craft items, eg jewellery and textiles as well as wall based work.

Caithness Hosts Exhibition Celebrating 300 Years Recording Nature
A key SNH contribution to the Year of Highland Culture 2007 programme is now on show for the public in Caithness.   Scottish Natural Heritage's Highland Naturalists display is available for free public viewing at Caithness Horizons in Thurso from 20 January until 15 March.

To 9th Feb 2009 www.highland.gov.uk/swansongallery American photojournalist Eve Arnold was one of the first western photographers to enter communist China.  She made her visit in 1979, at a time when its government was opening up to the outside world, and the exhibition shows a remarkable set of 40 of photos from this trip.

An exhibition of over 1000 digital images featuring pupils of Hillhead Primary School, their families and home life runs in the St Fergus Gallery Wick from the 9th January until the 7th February 2009.  Entitled "At Home" the pictures give a fascinating insight in to the lives of primary school pupils Eight budget digital cameras were purchased by the school and used to take the pictures between October and December last year.

Training Day To Promote Musical Skills
The Highland Council, in association with the National Youth Choir of Scotland, will be holding a training day to provide primary and secondary school staff the expertise to teach musical skills to young pupils.  There are also places available to anyone interested in learning more about the Kodàly approach to music education.

City Museum To Host Scottish Printmakers Exhibition
A limited edition print portfolio produced by students and invited artists of Gray's School of Art at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, is set to continue its journey to exhibitions around the world by debuting at the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery from 10 January to 7 February 2009, and then touring venues in Wick, Thurso and Kingussie.   The portfolio project is undertaken by final year students of Gray's each year, taking their individual prints and combining these in an attractive box set format (approximately 25cm2 in size) to be easily transportable.

Updated Homecoming Scotland 2009 Events Guide Unveiled
Party leaders today united to unveil the updated events guide for Homecoming Scotland 2009.   The programme has more than doubled in size since it was first launched in June this year, demonstrating the nationwide support and enthusiasm for the celebrations.

The competition to find the best 'Monster' story writer from pupils attending primary schools across the North of Scotland has been completed.  The competition was launched at the beginning of the year by Graham Winkle the author of 'The Loch Of Mey Monster' and involved entries from Caithness to Aberdeenshire.

New Highland Youth Gaelic Choir
The Highland Council is delighted to announce that members for its 7th Regional Music Group are now being recruited.   The new Highland Youth Gaelic Choir (HYGC) will be holding auditions on 10th January 2009 and applications are now being invited from pupils currently studying at any of the areas secondary schools.

Council publishes Gaelic Carol Book in time for Christmas
A Christmas Gaelic song and carol book titled "Duan Nollaig" has been published this week by The Highland Council's Mairi Mhor Gaelic Song Fellowship.   The book follows the successful production of 'Duan Nollaig' in 2007 - the only double CD of Gaelic Christmas songs and carols for all ages.

Small is Beautiful - - - - at No 12 Castle St , Thurso
The intricate miniature prints by Kathleen Lindsley are indeed beautiful examples of the art of wood engraving.  They are to be found in an unusual venue - her sister's home in Thurso, during the months of November and December.

Highland 2007 Evaluation Report
The Highland 2007 Evaluation Report on Scotland's Year of Highland Culture was released this week by The Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Government.  The Evaluation Report was produced by the independent Centre for Cultural Policy Research within Glasgow University.
