This concert will be performed by around 20 musicians who will be spending the weekend at Lyth during one of our Music Exchanges. It is very exciting to have Christina Laurie and Harriet Mackenzie (The Sutherland Duo) back with us and we are delighted to welcome members of The Caithness Orchestra.
Lyth Arts Centre 2n June 2013 Time: 15:00:00 Location: Lyth Arts Centre Length: 60 mins Age suitability : 14+ Talented young Thurso stage director Iain Macdonald brings us an interesting two-hander which explores a familiar dilemma - the father who wants to maintain an established rural life-style and the son who wants to leave and embrace the urban future. However this is a new play by Sólveig Jónsdóttir, set in her native Iceland.
Lyth Arts Centre Time: 17:30:00 Location: Lyth Arts Centre Length: 1 hour Interval: no Age suitability : 11+ The History of the Jazz Violin - illustrated talk by Chris Garrick The first name that comes to mind when we think about the jazz violin is Stephane Grappelli but he is just one of a line of innovators who form part of an evolving tradition that starts in Europe, moves to America and then ricochets back and forth across the Atlantic bringing the potential of this great orchestral and chamber instrument into the cadre of the jazz band. Chris has a unique collection of recordings and introduces and plays excerpts which trace the path of this development ending with a memorable moment when the great Yehudi Menuhin, master of the classical violin and Grappelli, master of the jazz violin met and played together.

He always finds talented collaborators to work with, on this occasion brilliant puppeteer and stage designer Nino Namitcheishvili and director Levan Tsuladze, both from Tbilisi, Georgia and flamenco guitarist Craig Ogden playing music composed by Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco, commissioned by Segovia..

This is gypsy music rather than jazz - but of course he can play anything as he proved during his previous memorable visits in 2004/05/06.

Hence their current 22 point UK tour, their album success and their much-envied big break being invited to open for The Proclaimers on a recent UK album launch tour.
