Its These Years Of Being - Devised Theatre Performance By Acting Students

7th December 2005

North Highland College HNC Acting & Performance students present a piece of devised theatre called 'Its these years of being' the material was inspired by the work of American Poet Richard Brautigan(1935-1984).

Brautigan who lived in San Francisco became an integral part of the mid- 60's scene and was part of the beat movement. He established a single signature style of prose that barely wavered at any point in his career. His work would lurch forward in odd, surreal anecdotes or observations that crashed into each other with jarring incongruity. An example of this is his poem 'Romeo and Juliet'..
If you will die for me,
I will die for you
And our graves will be like two lovers washing
Their clothes together
In a Laundromat
If you will bring the soap
I will bring the bleach.

The student's piece is a surreal exploration and journey looking at the constraints and boundaries of time on human relationships. They tired to incorporate elements of Brautigan's work and life into the piece which, include themes relating to madness, obsession with words and lust.

Students Rachel Rosie and Sarah Glen devised the piece under the direction of their tutor Ami Simpson.

The performances take place on Tuesday 13th and 15th at North Highland College Drama Studio, Ormlie Industrial Estate at 7.30pm. Also showing at Lyth Arts centre on Wednesday 14th at 7.30pm.
