Wave North 9th - 17th april

As you may already be aware in April 2011 Thurso will host the second event in the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Surfing competition, for the seventh successive year.

Over recent years the surfing competition has been self-contained within its own community of participants without significant impact to the local community. Wave North is seeking to build links between the visiting surfers and the local community by hosting a fringe festival around the main sporting event of the surfing competition. We want to provide a cohesive experience to those visiting the area, showcasing the best of what we have to offer and develop a destination experience with a variety of activities for people to get involved with.

Taking inspiration from the natural gifts already on our own doorstep Wave North aims to be a celebration of the sea in all its different guises. A range of activities targeted at differing markets will provide an experience which involves the challenge of the sea, incorporating serious sporting events as well as those more light-hearted, and draws in the creative industries of film, music and visual art. Wave North is designed to be inspiring and challenging and will cross over the boundaries between the local community and a world class sporting event.

Wave North has a varied programme of events beginning on Saturday 9th April with 'Party in the Precinct' featuring live music and a performance by the Thurso Players. Events will continue throughout the week featuring music, visual art, workshops, film, sporting events, surfing lessons, photography, outdoor swimming and various other activities.

Wave North has been organised by Caithness Horizons and supported by various organisations. We are really excited about this first year of Wave North and hope to expand on it next year!
