Community Drama Festival Coming To Caithness

Fifty four local actors are currently in rehearsal for Caithness's five entries into the Scottish Community Drama Association annual One Act Play Festival.
The plays will be publicly adjudicated over the SCDA festival's two nights on 25th and 26th Feb, performing at Thurso High School 7pm
What makes this year's festival unique is that each of the two nights performances will feature both youth and adult entries, providing audiences with a variety of entertainment, and insight from adjudicator, Ron Nichol.
Thurso Players, Wick Players and Mount Pleasant After School Drama Club will present the five plays, two of which were written especially for the festival.
Light-hearted comedy, drama and farce are on the bill of weekend entertainment. A synopsis of each play is reported in the 11th Feb 2011 John o'Groat's Journal. Thurso Players was formed in 1950 following the closing of the Thurso Dramatic Society, Thurso Dramatic Club and earlier Caithness drama groups that can be traced back to the 1890s. Despite the logistical problems of finding rehearsal and performance spaces the Players thrived, and in 1959 founder member Robin Sinclair offered a building in the old mill complex - if they could make it safe and watertight, which eventually over two to three decades later they were able to.
Each year we give some of our fantastic local organisations the chance of receiving some funding from our Christmas production and 2023's panto "The Snow Queen". Giving away a whopping £700 each to three excellent beneficiaries:.

The wicked Abanazer is seeking the magic lamp that contains the all-powerful Genie, so that he can rule the world, and is just steps away from succeeding! Is all hope lost? No! Help is at hand! A family posse of wannabe heroes are here to foil Abanazer's evil scheme! The innocent local lad, Aladdin, his brother, the cheeky Wishee Washee and their fearsome mother, washerwoman Widow Twankey are ready to intervene and save the day! Throw in a magic carpet, a mystical Spirit of the Ring, the Emperor of China, a beautiful princess and a couple of inept policemen and you have all the ingredients for a fantastic tale and great entertainment. Packed with songs, slapstick, silliness, audience participation for the whole family and all the fairytale magic of traditional pantomime!.
