19th November 2008
Once upon a time a very poor woodcutter lived in a tiny cottage in the forest with his two children, Hansel and Gretel. His second wife often ill-treated the children and was forever nagging the woodcutter. "Take them miles from home, so far that they can never find their way back!"
So starts the fairytale of Hansel & Gretel, told this year in Pantomime by Thurso Players. The show runs at Thurso High School from Wednesday 10th to Saturday 13th of December at 7.30 pm each evening with an additional matinee performance at 2.00pm on Saturday afternoon.
Directed by John Glen, a cast of experienced Thurso Players panto regulars along with a few new faces have put together a show that has all of the features that make for a traditional Pantomime.
The Dame, as always a man in tights, is this year played by Andrew Crawford who holds the reins for this part in more ways than one!
A village idiot in the person of Wally the odd job man, Wally by name and wally by nature is played by Glyn Jackson. His lovely daughter Leanne is friendly with Hansel and Gretel the local woodcutter's children, and all three of these youngsters fall foul of the nasty Witch Hazel (Donna Swanson).
Love interest in the person of a handsome Prince who falls for Leanne and comedy from Kilroy the Bear and his friends the Woodland Fairies all help to put together a fun-filled production. Be wary of the Witch's evil cats when you come to the show and you should be all right!
Whatever your age there's something for everybody, lavish costumes, songs a-plenty, an abundance of really corny jokes and even a Crossword Puzzle in the programme. Tickets, priced at 7.00 and 5.00 (Concessions), are available from McBeath's Jewellers Traill Street Thurso but get yours soon, the word is, they're selling fast!

The Birthday Party is about Stanley Webber, an erstwhile piano player in his 30s, who lives in a run down boarding house, run by Meg and Petey Boles, in an English seaside town, probably on the south coast, not too far from London. Two sinister strangers, Goldberg and McCann, who arrive supposedly on his birthday and who appear to have come looking for him, turn Stanleys apparently innocuous birthday party organised by Meg into a nightmare.
