The Unconquered by Torben Betts
In a non-descript coastal town somewhere in these islands, a fiercely intelligent young schoolgirl lives with her parents. She has barricaded herself away from a political and cultural system that she despises; cursing the air that she breathes and the bourgeois mentality her parents emulate. Despite their encouragement to participate in the wider world, she prefers to spend her time reading political tracts and drinking heavily. Then, even as she is embarking on another diatribe against the global governance system, a people's revolution suddenly breaks out…….

'I have so turned my back from the world, so immersed myself in the double-edged escapism of fiction and history, that this popular uprising, which could have given my life a meaning, has occurred completely without me!'

The play is both frighteningly dark and brutally funny, both broadly comic and profoundly tragic. Its themes are the absurd logic of imperialism and how it manifests itself in individual actions. A poetic meditation on the self's struggle against the state, about the meaning of community, revolution.

'Torben Betts is just about the most original and extraordinary writer of drama we have…a boldly visionary poet…a flamingly original writer…'
Liz Lochhead on Torben Betts

Sunday 1 April 2007 - Starts at 3.00pm
Right Lines Theatre Company
"Illicit" (matinée performance)
Illicit is a fast-paced comedy show about hard-nosed ambition, illicit whisky and perfume! Scotching the rumour that business start-up is singularly dull, Illicit neatly blurs the boundaries between fantasy and reality with a deluxe blend of interactive comedy, mission statements and technical wizardry - 100% proof that the show will be a barrel of laughs!

Show Outline

Inspired by her brother's romantic but unworkable idea, Winnie Grant has developed an innovative whisky-based product, bringing her the sweet smell of success and rich praise in the Highland Business community.

Her meteoric rise to prominence has been rewarded with the title of Young Enterprising Entrepreneur of the Year. She has been invited to receive her award and then give a presentation to fellow industry professionals and VIP guests - the audience!

Utilising the latest technology and top-end presentational aids, proceedings run extraordinarily smoothly, until an unscheduled interruption forces Winnie to nip out for a moment - just long enough for the gremlins to get into the machine! The true story of the young entrepreneur's struggle then begins to unravel, almost as quickly as she does…

Illicit is performed by Jackie Goode and is written and directed by Euan Martin and Dave Smith from Moray-based Right Lines Productions http://www.rightlines.net In the last few years, the writers have been responsible for popular theatre shows such as "Who Bares Wins" - the show about the naked rambler, "The Accidental Death of an Accordionist" and "Watching Bluebottles" both of which the company brought to Lyth Village Hall and "The Wedding" which was performed at the Portland Arms Hotel, Lybster. Right Lines Productions came second in the Highland Quest competition, to find a new musical for Highland 2007 with their entry "Whisky Kisses".

The afternoon of April Fool's Day is just the moment to enjoy this fast-paced comedy show! Stay behind afterwards for tea and Betsy's baking.

The ancient folklore tradition of ‘buying the wind' was common across Caithness and the fishing routes of the North Atlantic.  The tradition involved sailors purchasing 3 knots of thread, rope or fabric, to be undone as wind is required, but the mariner is instructed on no account to untie the third knot, as it may start a hurricane.
