Saturday 24th February sees the Scottish Community Drama Association's 75th District Adult Festival which takes place in The Assembly Rooms, Wick. With entries from both Wick Players and Thurso Players it's sure to make for an entertaining evening.

The curtain rises at 7.30 p.m. and first up are Wick Players with their entry, "The Pushcart Pedlars" directed by Donald Farmer and Andrew Craigie. The play features a cast of three actors - Clare Sturrock, David Hunter and Drew MacLeod. As the story unfolds we learn of the greenhorn, Shimmel, fresh from the old country, who meets the older, wiser Cornelius, and is inveigled into buying his pushcart business. Complications arise when Cornelius returns with another pushcart and proceeds to compete with Shimmel at the same location. Shimmel is smitten by Maggie, a flower seller who aspires to become a musical comedy star. Learning quickly to adapt, Shimmel decides to become a theatrical producer with hilarious albeit satisfying results. Bananas (generously donated by Wick's Somerfield store after a fervent 'appeel' from the director) are a vital feature of the drama.

The Thurso Players entry, directed by Alex Rankine, and featuring actors Jacqui Barclay, John Glen and Robert Roy is an Bernard Lawrence's adaptation of Chekhov's "The Bear."

Set in a large house on the outskirts of Glasgow, during a hot afternoon in the summer of 1890 we meet widow Flora McNeil and her sole companion, her faithful servant Leckie, who cannot for the life of him understand her determination to 'enjoy' her widowhood as a recluse. That intention is soon thwarted by the arrival of "The Bear" in the shape of Regimental Sgt. Major Andrew Baird, come to collect the debts incurred by her 'dear departed'. Poor Leckie, Flora's faithful manservant is unable to influence the outcome of this unusual and often humorous battle of the sexes, but tries his best with the only weapon he can find. A battle of wills ensues which is finally resolved by the use, or misuse of firearms.

The adjudicator this year will be Ms Sylvie Taylor.
Tickets, priced at £7.00 and £5.00 (Concessions) are available from Poltney News, Dempster Street, Wick and McBeath Jewellers, Traill Street, Thurso.
