'The Jolly Beggars and a' That'

January sees the return of the programme featuring Professional artists to Thurso's Mill Theatre which starts of in style with a celebration of the works of Robert Burns in song and verse.

'The Jolly Beggars and a' That' is an informal performance of a little known but superb musical play (Cantata) by Burns consisting of eight poems and eight songs. Balance of the programme comprises the Burns Songs, from the light galloping instrumental tunes based upon jigs and reels, to the more moving love songs and serious political material.

The performance will be by artists from the internationally acclaimed "THE COMPLETE
SONGS OF ROBERT BURNS" (12 vols. 13 CDs, Linn Records 1996-2003), the only comprehensive recording of the Burns songs ever undertaken (upwards of 400 comps).

Singers are JOHN MORRAN (Deaf Shepherd), WENDY WEATHERBY. Players are MARC DUFF (ex Capercaillie), SANDY BRECHIN (Bourach) with running commentary from DR FRED FREEMAN (Musical Director "THE COMPLETE SONGS OF R. B.").

The show will start at 8.00pm on Wednesday 31st January and tickets are priced at £9.00 and £6.00 (Concession). A small Burns supper will be served during the interval and this will include both traditional and vegetarian varieties of Haggis.
Advanced bookings can be made by calling 01847-896956. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

The Birthday Party by Harold PinterThumbnail for article : The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter
The Birthday Party is about Stanley Webber, an erstwhile piano player in his 30s, who lives in a run down boarding house, run by Meg and Petey Boles, in an English seaside town, probably on the south coast, not too far from London.  Two sinister strangers, Goldberg and McCann, who arrive supposedly on his birthday and who appear to have come looking for him, turn Stanleys apparently innocuous birthday party organised by Meg into a nightmare.
