All talented young musicians attending Highland Council schools are currently being invited to apply for membership of one of the Highland Young Musicians eight regional music groups which are run as an extension to the work of the Council’s Instrumental Tuition Service.

These Groups continue to perform at the highest level and are in growing demand for performances in addition to those planned in their annual rehearsal and performance calendar. Membership for all the Groups is by audition and invitation after the annual Audition Day and members are drawn from all areas of Highland.

The Audition Day, which usually sees over 300 young musicians applying for places, is a vital part of the process which ensures that whilst maximum participation is encouraged, high musical standards are also maintained. This years event will be held in Inverness on Saturday 22 March and applications need to be returned by Friday 14 March.

Applications are currently open for Highland Regional Youth Orchestra; Highland Schools Wind Band;Highland Youth String Orchestra;Highland Youth Big Band; ‘snas (ceilidh Band); Highland Youth Pipe Band; Còisir G (Regional Gaelic Choir); Highland Youth Choir.

There are vacancies in all the groups, but Highland Youth Choir and Còisir G would be particularly keen to hear from boys with changed voices.

Application booklets and further information can be obtained by contacting Ruth Urquhart on 01349 868222

The 2013/14 season has seen a very successful collaboration with Royal Scottish National Orchestra with performances by all groups in in Aviemore’s MacDonald Highland Resort and Eden Court, Inverness. Highland Regional Youth Orchestra was conducted in the first part of their season by Garry Walker, a Conductor of international standing. The orchestra then came under the baton of Jean-Claude Picard, Assistant Conductor with RSNO who will continue to lead and inspire HRYO next season. A number of other changes to the format and leadership of groups will be in place for next season.
