More Information -
Make Works are looking for eight designers, makers, visual artists, photographers,
film makers, architects, tech-geeks, writers and cross disciplinary practicioners to
join us on the Make Works tour. Residencies run for five days at a time working
from our mobile studio July - September 2013.
We will be visiting up to 180 factories, makers and material suppliers accross
Scotland; mapping information, collecting data, making films, taking photographs
and writing about what we find. Residents are asked to take inspiration from these
activities and work alongside us to develop a critical dialogue and build on the
wider aims of the Make Works project. They will meet some really interesting
makers and manufactuers and gain access to facilities, raw materials and places they
may not have discovered before.
Areas of exploration might include; processes of making, manufacture, industry,
craftsmanship and materials and what it means to do this in specific places on a
local level. The challenge is to think through ways of making, which might relate to
specific processes or machines; industrial landscapes, cultural values of objects in
relation to place. It might consider the visualisation of data, better understanding
traditional skill and heritage, the stories of people involved in industry or look at
the role of design within the circular economy.
On the road, we ask that residents write two blog entries documenting practical
activity and thoughts on the way. We also ask that residents visually document any
processes of making over the five days; and discuss some of this process on film.
Each residency will be structured slightly differently for the individual and we will
work with each resident to develop a programme that works with their creative
practice and logistics for the week. If appropriate, we can accept collaborative
proposals of 2 participants for a joint residency.
We plan for these bodies of work (a collection of perspectives) to be brought
together in a publication once the tour has finished. Depending on the nature of
work this may lead to a supportive exhibition; and work is likely to be referenced
through events, talks and film screenings as part of our public engagement
programmes. There will also be an event facilitating discussion and exchange
between all residents at the end of the tour.
Expenses and Artist Fee
Residents will all receive a £500 artists fee, a small daily expenses budget,
accomodation and travel costs whilst on the road. Travel to and from the agreed
starting point must be covered by the resident themselves.
How to Apply
To apply please submit a short (approx. 500 words) proposal detailing your
interest and direction of work you would take forward. We want to know what
interests you and why would you be excited about the opportunity to join us. In
addition please include an artists statement or short bio; and links to your website
and previous projects.
Please also include 5 consecutive dates in which you would most like to join us for,
and whether there are any areas of particular interest you would like to explore
(e.g specific materials, machine, factories or place). Full details of where we will be
on particular dates are available at our website.
RESIDENCIESApplications can be made by emailing studio[AT]makeworks.co.uk from today,
Monday 13th May. Please enter the subject line ‘MAKE WORKS RESIDENCIES’
followed by your name. The deadline for all applications is 5pm on 31 May.
What happens next?
Applications will be considered by the Make Works team. Once a short list has
been selected, unsuccessful candidates will be informed by email and short listed
candidates are invited for a short discussion about their proposal to go over the
logistics of each project.
Selection Criteria
The residents we are looking for are a mixture of emerging and established
creative professionals (including recent arts graduates) to create a diverse range
of bodies of work, discussion and research. Applicants will primarily be selected
on their passion and understanding for making and manufacture; as well as any
particularly interesting lines of enquiry and quality of previous arts production. It
is also important that artists are confident in being able to work independently at
times, and able to adjust to the travelling nature of the programme.

made possible through the support of the Jerwood Charitable
