Caledonian Canal Ceilidh Trail - Cuairt Cèilidh a' Chanàil Chaileannaich
Musicians and supporters of the 8th Caledonian Canal Ceilidh Trail cast off today (10 July, 2009) on the MV Caledonian at Muirtown Basin Marina, Inverness to promote the new band line up for 2009.  Caledonian Canal Ceilidh Trail is a traditional music project which runs from Monday 13 July to Friday 7 August.

"Body Currents" Dance Project Coming To Caithness
Eden Court has secured £ 590k funding for this community based dance project, £ 475k from Scottish Arts Council, £ 39k from Highland Leader, £ 36k from Cairngorm Leader, £15k from Robertson Trust and £25k from the Council (£20kfrom the Highland Cultural Programme and £5k from Area Arts Budgets), thus securing significant new resources for the Highlands.   "Body Currents" will consist of four dance residencies, each of 9 months duration, centred on the locations of Dornie, Aviemore, Lybster and Fort William and involving other communities, towns and villages in the surrounding area; these locations were chosen because of their waterside locations and in consultation with local communities.

The Wick Society have put together an extraordinary exhibition of some fifty images from the Johnston Collection, now showing in the St Fergus Gallery, Wick.  The images were printed on a new large format A1 printer obtained recently by the Wick Society with grant aid from Awards for All and the Highland Council Culture Fund.

HIE Gives Boost to Region's Arts and Culture
Over half a million pounds has been earmarked to support and develop community arts and cultural activities in the North over the next two years.   Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) this week announced approval of funding totalling £537,150 over two years to arts development agency, HI-Arts (Highlands and Islands Arts Ltd).

Winners of The Highland Council's Neil Gunn writing competition 2009 were announced on Tuesday 23 June 2009 at a prize-giving ceremony held at Inverness Town House.   Organised by library staff from The Highland Council Education, Culture and Sport Service in partnership with the Neil Gunn Memorial Trust, this was the 10th anniversary of the popular competiton which attracted entries from Finland, France, Brazil, America, Canada, Wales, England and Scotland.

Young Highland Musicians Compete For Top Title
Thirteen of the Highland's most talented young musicians will gather at Drumossie Hotel, Inverness on Monday 22 June as they complete for the title 'Highland Young Musician of the Year 2009' The competition is open to all those who are currently members of any of the Highland Regional Music Groups.  The competitors come from Thurso High School, Portree High School, Tain Royal Academy, Dingwall Academy and Millburn, Culloden and Charleston Academies.

Firmly poised for future success, two final year students at Gray's School of Art are anticipating the launch of their Degree Show this Friday (12 June 2009) basking in the knowledge that their work has already been credited by some of the major national players within their chosen fields.   Craig Shepherd (42), a painter who is originally from Ellon and now resides in Fordoun, has been named runner up for the prestigious Scottish International Education Trust (SIET) Visual Arts Award.

REVIVAL OF THE WICK HERRING QUEEN FESTIVAL
26 - 28 June 2009 Wick HarbourFest Committee, organisers of last year's very successful HarbourFest'07, have announced that they will be arranging another community event in 2009 which will further develop interest in the maritime and fishing heritage of Caithness.  The festival will feature the return to Telford's harbour of a heritage fishing fleet and a re-enactment of the Herring Queen Festival and crowning, last held in Wick in 1953.

North Highland Connections is proud to offer a rare opportunity to see two of Shakespeare's greatest plays in performance at Ullapool.  The performances are a direct result of the formal partnership which we have with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, and we intend to offer many more manifestations of this partnership in the future months and years.
