Youth Orchestra to Perform in Nairn

Young musicians from the Highland Regional Youth Orchestra are busy rehearsing for their first public concert of the year which takes place at the Nairn Community Centre on Saturday 12 April.

Conductor Susan Dingle will lead the orchestra in performing a wide repertoire which will include the works of Brahms, Smetana, Strauss and Greig.

The 90 piece orchestra is made up of talented musicians from across the whole Highlands who range in ages from 10 years up to 18. Organised and run by The Highland Council, the orchestra was formed to give young players the experience of performing live and giving them the opportunity to develop their skills beyond any experience available in individual schools.

Norman Bolton, The Highland Council's Music Development Officer said: "Members of the orchestra have been working hard to prepare for this concert and are looking forward to entertaining the audience with a great evening of music. With members coming from all parts of Highland, the occasional weekend rehearsals are intensive and tiring but thankfully these young musicians still find time to make new friendships which last beyond their time in the orchestra. We hope that when the older players move on, they take many happy memories of shared experiences with them."

The orchestra receives support from The Highland Council, Friends of Highland Youth Music, The Music Shop, Graham Urquhart Travel, Ramada Jarvis and the Educational Institute of Scotland.

The performance starts at 7.30pm and tickets costing £6 or £4 concession are available by telephoning Angeline Walker on 01349 868271 during office hours. Ticket sales are going so well that the concert is expected to be sold out in advance, with no tickets likely to be available on the door.
