International Residency Opportunity

8th March 2007

This item has been passed on by Linda Hutton of Caithness Arts.

Cromarty Arts Trust
Macedonian Residency Prize
THE HIGHLANDER'S REVENGE 2007
Artform: MUSIC

"My time in the village seems almost more fictional than real. Like a character of E.M.Forster's. I 'breakfast' on the sun-drenched balcony absorbing my surroundings.(The) chickens scratch in the dust and the clouds scud about wispy and inconsequential in a clear wash of ipomoea blue sky" (Jon Macleod, HI~Arts weblog, Highlander's Revenge 2006).

Cromarty Arts Trust would like to announce an international residency opportunity for Highlands and Islands Musicians following on from our successful 2006 residency with visual artist Jon Macleod.

Applications are invited from Musicians to take up the opportunity of a residency in the Balkan state of Macedonia. The residency opportunity is hosted by Irena and Sergej Andreevski who have invited artists to their colony in Sloestica, the south-west part of Macedonia for the past five years. The couple visited Scotland in 2005 at the invitation of the Trust, as our first International Artist in Residence. Their website can be found at http://www.artpoint-gumno.org.mk

Irena and Sergej say:
"Macedonia, as part of the Balkans is a country traditionally rich with ethnic sounds. We expect, that for a musician, the environment itself will inspire him/her to create music and to compare the sounds of Macedonia with the sounds of Scotland. We will make the Macedonian ethnic archive at Skopje, capital of Macedonia available, prepare a program and arrange some meetings with Macedonian musicians (depending on the style of music preferred by the Musician in residency). If the musician wishes, we will organize a solo performance in the village, and maybe in Bitola or Skopje. Collaborations will be encouraged and visits to important cultural and historic places will be arranged"

The residency would be in Macedonia for not less than three weeks and not more than four weeks between 1st September and 30th September 2007.

Accommodation will be provided and a travel bursary of 750. In addition the artist would receive a fellowship of 1500.

For their part the Musician would be expected to provide a web diary for the HI-Arts and Cromarty Arts Trust websites during their stay in Macedonia, in addition they are expected to come to Cromarty on their return to give an exhibition or public event on their residency experiences in early November 2007.

This residency is the second in a series of five to Macedonia, focusing on a different artform each year.
