Following on from the sell-out success of La bohme earlier this year, Scottish Opera will be back out on the road this autumn with a brand new production of Die Fledermaus.
Taking in nineteen dates across the country, the tour will stop off in communities from Kirkwall to Newton Stewart with one performance in each location. For Caithness the return of Scottish Opera will be welcomed once again giving a rare opportunity to see and hear opera at the highest level but well within the reach of local folk. This version of Dei Fledermaus is sung in English
Die Fledermaus
Johann Strauss Jnr - the composer of Die Fledermaus - wrote dozens of popular dance pieces in addition to waltzes and has become one of Vienna's greatest exports. He also produced 17 operettas filled with his own special brand of delicious music and by far the most beloved of these is Die Fledermaus or The Revenge of the Bat. The work remains a masterpiece among operettas as the Viennese waltz rhythms that are the trademark of Johann Strauss bring a quality of enchantment to the work.
Mistaken identities, flirtations at a masked ball, elegant frivolities and confusions of all kinds provide a hilarious vehicle for some of the most captivating music ever written. The ball scene alone includes 'The Champagne Chorus' and the famous 'Laughing Song'.
Directed by Lee Blakely, this new production will see Strauss' operetta wittily updated to the present day, with the staging humorously reflecting society's current obsession with wealth, appearance and the culture of disposable celebrity. A group of eight dynamic young singers will bring Die Fledermaus to life, with Scottish Opera's Oliver Rundell fizzing along on the piano as Music Director.
