An Evening of Brazilian Music & Latin Jazz With Peter Griggs, Guitarist (New York)
Peter Griggs, a native of New York City, has established a reputation as a guitarist with a delicate touch on his instrument.
His study of Brazilian guitar styles has taken him several times to Rio de Janeiro, and he excels in the performance of choro, bossa nova and samba by composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa.
Peter Griggs has performed in concert throughout North America and Europe, with more than 40 recent appearances in Germany, England, Scotland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Norway at art centres, museums, galleries, clubs and cafes. His repertoire includes his own compositions, where he draws upon many elements to create a unique musical style, combining Brazilian, classical and nuevo flamenco techniques with a jazz musician's sensibility and spirit of improvisation. In this way, he hopes to expand the boundaries of his instrument. He has recorded on Folkways Records, Music of the World and Treecastle Music.
His soundtracks have been heard on W-Net Television (New York), National Public Radio (USA) and the World-Wide Video Festival (The Hague, Netherlands). His concerts also include music by American jazz composers such as Thelonious Monk and Cole Porter, in addition to his own compositions and a songbook that ranges from the Buena Vista Social Club to The Beatles.
Writing in in the newspaper Klner Stadt-Anzeiger (Colgone, Germany), critic Elke Sprunkel describes Griggs as "a master of soft and expressive tones on his instrument." In Bergische Morgenpost, Sigrid Hedderich describes a concert by Griggs as "a demonstration of the almost unbelievable talent of the guitarist. Peter Griggs performs magic!"
