An evening of Scottish music featuring composer Ronald Stevenson

We welcome a return visit to Lyth by Christopher Guild, a young Scottish pianist, graduate of the Royal College of Music, London and champion of Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson.

Ronald Stevenson is probably the last truly great pianist and composer of his generation. Born in Lancashire in 1928, he settled in Scotland, his paternal homeland, in 1955 and lived there until his death in 2015. He has a reputation as Scotland's premier composer and the world's foremost authority on the composer Ferruccio Busoni. His correspondence with the likes of Percy Grainger, Britten, Sibelius and Shostakovich is of inestimable historical importance, and what he has contributed to the public’s awareness of Scottish musical history through his writings and broadcasts is invaluable. Not least, he was a phenomenal pianist.

Stevenson’s music, as well as encompassing large works includes charming miniatures, often incredibly beautiful. These range from original compositions to transcriptions of Scottish folk music and an Irish Mass. Some of these pieces are dedicated to Scottish poets including Hugh MacDiarmid. Christopher launched his first Stevenson album in April this year in Edinburgh which received the following Cambridge Journals on-line review: Click Here
Christopher has recorded the first of two CDs for Toccata Classics of Stevenson’s work: Click Here

For the recital Christopher will perform the following:

Stevenson: A Scottish Triptych
Maxwell Davies: Yesnaby Ground
Judith Weir: The Art of Touching the Keyboard
Ronald Center: Piano Sonata
(Break)
Bax: Piano Sonata No.3 in G sharp
Merrick/Stevenson: Hebridean Seascape

"...the rhythmic vivacity and crispness of his delivery, the subtlety of his pedaling, the incisiveness of his attack with never a hint of heaviness..." (Calum MacDonald, International Record Review)
