The Caithness Junior Orchestra was created last September to give an opportunity to all young musicians aged 8 and over to make music together. The orchestra now has 24 junior members from 10 different schools across Caithness and north Sutherland. The weekly rehearsals are a great chance for the children to make new musical friends. We're currently working towards our next performance which will be an afternoon concert at the beginning of April, and we're also planning to perform at the Music Festival in June, so now is the ideal time to join in the fun.

Playing in the orchestra supports the fantastic teaching which is going on every week during music lessons across the county. Some of our members attend weekly lessons in school with Highland Council instructors Mr Laybourne (strings) and Mrs Anderson (woodwind and brass), while others go to music lessons after school - we currently also have pupils from seven different private music tutors who attend the orchestra. We're so lucky in Caithness to have so many good music tutors, and they all know that playing in a youth orchestra is a great way to encourage children to practice and to enjoy playing. Research shows that children who attend a music group are more likely to keep on playing and reach a higher standard than those who just attend lessons.

The Caithness Junior Orchestra rehearses weekly, every Monday, from 4-5pm at Mount Pleasant Primary School. If you'd like your child to join in the fun, get in touch with Susie or Katrina on 01847 893517 or visit our website www.caithnessmusic.com
