Silk Paper Making Course In Cromarty By Caithness Artist

30th March 2006

In partnership with Cromarty Arts Trust, the Highland Council is offering a unique experience for people in Cromarty to try their hand at silkpaper-making and fibre art techniques.

The three day workshop project will be led by internationally renowned artist and author, Joanne Kaar from Caithness. Joanne has travelled around the world offering professional workshops in all kinds of paper-making, as far away as the USA and the Far East. However, the techniques behind silk fibre-art are very accessible, particularly to those who have had little or no experience in this particular artform. Joanne has already run similar workshops in Strathpeffer and Invergordon this year, and the participants found the techniques very easy to pick up, and the results of the work have been very satisfying and rewarding.

The process involves shaping various colours of natural silk fibres, and incorporating found objects such as dried leaves, seeds and twigs from the surrounding area to create an environmental theme. More personal themes can be achieved through incorporating photos, signatures and other articles. The resulting fabrics can be framed as fibre `pictures' or worked into larger-scale constructions or even articles of clothing.

The project will take place in The Stables, Cromarty from Tuesday 4th until Thursday 6th April, from 10am till 4pm. Participants are encouraged to sign up for all three days, but shorter sessions can be incorporated if necessary. The workshops are particularly suited to older participants, so they are open to adults and children aged 12 years and over. Participants are advised to bring packed lunches.

Thanks to funding from Ross & Cromarty Enterprise and the Highland Council, admission is free. Please book your place with Cromarty Arts Trust on 01381 600357, or email: info[AT]cromartyartstrust.org.uk. Places are restricted to 16 participants, so please book early.

Because of the local funding, participants from Ross & Cromarty will be given booking priority over those from outwith the area.
