Scottish Opera will perform Leoö JanŠek's intimate and intense love story, KŠtya KabanovŠ, in 21 venues across Scotland this season.

The production will take in Giffnock, Drumnadrochit, Cromarty, Stornonway, Elgin, Aboyne, Lerwick, Kirkwall, Wick, Strontian, Dundee, Fort William, Linlithgow, Glenrothes, Irvine, Helensburgh, Dumfries, Galashiels, Easterhouse, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Kally Lloyd-Jones directs her first opera for the Company. As well as running dance theatre company Company Chordelia, Kally has worked with Scottish Opera as choreographer/movement director on a number of highly regarded productions in recent seasons including Cimarosa's The Secret Marriage, Weir's A Night at the Chinese Opera and Smetana's The Two Widows, which won a Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh International Festival last year.

Scottish sopranos Nadine Livingston (from Glasgow) and Joanne Boag (originally from Dundee) share the title role in the nine-strong cast. Joanne has already performed with Scottish Opera in last year's Essential Scottish Opera Opera Highlights, and this will be Nadine's first major professional role. This season Nadine has joined Scottish Opera's Emerging Artists programme, designed to give young singers valuable training and experience at the start of their careers. Accompanying the production is pianist Ian Ryan, whose spirited playing for both The Merry Widow and Cinderella has been a highlight over the past couple of seasons.

KŠtya KabanovŠ is the story of a young woman trapped in the traditional ideals of a close-knit community in 1920s Russia. A dutiful wife in love with another man, KŠtya is torn between the prospect of public shame and private isolation, and the tale meets its shadowy crescendo when KŠtya is forced to confess her true feelings by her wilful and domineering mother-in-law.

Scottish Opera's General Director, Alex Reedijk says, 'We want people all over Scotland to be able to experience great opera and that's why we tour extensively each year. Audiences will love JanŠček's heart-rending tale, with its evocative blend of beautiful music and gripping drama. It's also a great showcase for Scottish talent. Don't miss it.'

The production is sung in English.
