Caithness features heavily in a new book from author Aaron Mullins. A former Wick high School pupil, the book also contains a Story Behind the Stories section where he reveals the aspects of his life growing up in Caithness which inspired each story.

From Dunnett Forest and Whaligoe Steps, and from Castletown to Beinn a' Chrulaiste, his love for the Highlands and its people shines through, both in his stories and reflecting on his personal journey in the Author's Notes. It also considers the intricacies of capturing the correct-sounding spelling of specific Scots dialects from their time and place in history.

As Dr Aaron Mullins, he is an award-winning, internationally published psychologist. As a fiction author, he's known for exploring the darker side of psychology in his work. This can be seen in the stories of redemption, a prank gone wrong in The Gala Queen, and a heavy suitcase containing a dark secret in Last Train South (from Wick to Inverness).

There are also inspiring stories, as James uses his disability as a strength in Equal To and Greater Than, and a troubled woman hiking through the Highlands discovers a strange way to overcome her anxiety and depression in Black Dog in the Devil's Bothy.

There is a laugh-out-loud dark comedy story, Revenge of the Green Man, where Charlie drags his friend into his ever-crazier schemes. The legend of Tam o' Shanter inspired The House on Lovers' Lane and a legendary Orcadian sea creature comes to the mainland in Call of the Nuckelavee.

A couple make a strange stop in The Road Trip, an unopened box with a deadly history is dragged from Wick River in Secrets of the River, and a nuclear biologist is being hunted in Stolen Peace.

So this collection of Scottish short stories has something for everyone. Mysteries and Misadventures: Tales from the Highlands is available from Amazon as both a paperback and ebook.
