‘Graffito' at Caithness Horizons

15th September 2018

Our next exhibition at Caithness Horizons is called Graffito. Breaking the boundaries of what is art and what gets shown in a gallery, Graffito is an exhibition that celebrates artwork that is available to everyone.

Traditionally graffiti has been seen as anti social, fringe or even as criminal vandalism, but with an emphasis on social inclusion, we are celebrating street, pop, comic and zine art as mainstream art that will be hanging in our gallery. Literally meaning mark making, this is a multi coloured "on the wall" exhibition of all manner of graphic mark making and breaking the boundaries of what art is, and what gets shown in a gallery. We will be hosting street painting & comic workshops, guided gallery tours, and collaborating with our local schools and council.

We are aiming this exhibition at young people and the young at heart, as a way of inviting new and future audiences to a museum and gallery experience.

Marc Delaye of Freshpaint.org in the Black Isle, is an established community projects artist, and will be tagging the back wall of the gallery on 5th September, followed by the main exhibition opening on the 11th September 2018. There are a series of workshops planned to take place throughout the exhibition, including Illustration and Animation with Hannah Cambridge.

Other exhibitors include Andy Strachen, of Comic Creations Studios Dundee, David Robertson of Fred Egg Comics and Zu Dominak- all of whom work with University of Dundee with the celebrated Masters degrees in Comics and Graphic Novels ( the only course of its kind in the UK). The city of Dundee is a recognized powerhouse of comics production. It is home to DC Thomson & Co Ltd, producers of iconic titles such as the Beano, Dandy, Commando, Starblazer and Bunty.

Other exhibitors include Victor Nobis and his graphic art series of paintings called Fallen Giants; a kind of fantasy surrealist dream space where cities like Edinburgh rise and twist through the torso of neon lit giant figures that sit in expanding and exploding universes. Hannah Cambridge studied animation at Bristol/ University of West England and will be taking animation workshops in early October; she is also showing an exhibition of her Caithness paintings in our popular Cafe Gallery, during the period of the exhibition.
