The Far North Youth Orchestra is a brand new symphony orchestra, conducted by Susie Dingle, for young musicians aged 8 to 13 who live in Caithness or Sutherland. On Saturday 28th June 2014 the group held a day of practice and lessons followed by a short concert to show parents and friends what they had learned that day.

The young musicians were mainly from Caithness but were joined by a few from as far away as Rogart and Dornoch. There are not to many opportunities for young people in the far north to play regularly with a symphony orchestra format. The recently formed Far North Youth Orchestra is increasing the chances for many to improve in their chosen instruments.

Funding is always an issue but they have been very lucky this year to have gained support from Lyth Arts Centre who generously shared a grant received from the Robertson Trust for community music with them. Although there may be a small charge to players for these days the groups must still look to ways of raising funds to cover expenses.

Susie Dingle stressed at the end of the day that the orchestra will happily take any young person who can read and play even one note. They intend to be as inclusive as possible so if you know a child or young person who wants to try and advance their music skills then this orchestra is an excellent way to start.

There are no auditions - to be eligible to join the orchestra, you just have to be learning to play an instrument and, on the day, you will need to be able to read the music for the notes you can play.

If anyone is fund-raising and looking for a group to help then this orchestra would be a very good place to send your help.
