Sutherland Duo and Caithness Orchestra

25th May 2013

This concert will be performed by around 20 musicians who will be spending the weekend at Lyth during one of our Music Exchanges. It is very exciting to have Christina Laurie and Harriet Mackenzie (The Sutherland Duo) back with us and we are delighted to welcome members of The Caithness Orchestra. For some of them this will be a new experience as, among other things, they explore chamber as opposed to orchestral playing.

Christina Lawrie
Hailed as a rising star by the magazine International Piano, Scottish pianist Christina studied at Chetham's School of Music before going on to read Music at Trinity College, Cambridge and subsequently at the Royal College of Music. She made her debut in May 2009 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Dundee's Caird Hall. Recent engagements have included live BBC Radio 3 broadcasts, a debut at the Cheltenham Music Festival, and a recital at the Purcell Room for the South Bank Centre's Fresh Young Musicians' Platform. Her début CD was released in July 2010.

Harriet Mackenzie
Harriet graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with first class honours and made her highly acclaimed Purcell Room début as part of the Park Lane Young Artists Series. Since then she has toured Europe, America, China, South America, South Africa and Japan as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician and given recitals worldwide in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall, the South Bank Centre, London and numerous broadcasts 'live' for BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and Hungarian National Radio. She frequently performs concertos both in the UK and abroad and has released three CDs.

The Caithness Orchestra
The Caithness Orchestra goes from strength to strength and has recently seen the arrival of Susan Dingle as its new conductor. Susan is a freelance orchestral and choral conductor who studied at the State Conservatory of St Petersburg and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Since then she has worked with a wide variety of ensembles and orchestras around the UK including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, The Paragon Ensemble and The Highland Chamber Orchestra. Susan moved permanently to Caithness in July 2012 where she now teaches privately.

Wishing The Wind Winter Exhibition At LythThumbnail for article : Wishing The Wind Winter Exhibition At Lyth
The ancient folklore tradition of ‘buying the wind' was common across Caithness and the fishing routes of the North Atlantic.  The tradition involved sailors purchasing 3 knots of thread, rope or fabric, to be undone as wind is required, but the mariner is instructed on no account to untie the third knot, as it may start a hurricane.
