750 primary and secondary young people from all over Highland were in Inverness on Thursday to take part in the 2012 Highland Music Day.

Organised by The Highland Council, seven venues across the city were used to host workshops for young musicians of strings, brass, woodwind, bagpipes, pipe band drumming, traditional music, percussion and voice.

The day, for all abilities, included group playing sessions and featured special guest tutors including flautist Susan Frank, clarinetist Lawrence Gill, saxophonist Richard Ingham, brass educator Glenn Munro, percussion group the Mugen Taiko drummers, traditional musicians Charlie McKerron and Gordon Gunn, and Highland Council Instrumental Instructors.

The Highland Council's Music Development Officer Norman Bolton said: "This is the third year we have run a Highland Music Day and a record number of young people took part. Both adults and students all voted it a great success. Being open to all levels of ability means the musicians can experience what it is like to play en-mass and having the guest tutors working alongside our Highland Instrumental Instructors was a big bonus. I would like to thank everyone involved and we look forward to the 2013 event."
