Will Lottery Funding For 2012 Olympics Hit Your Arts Project?
Lottery Funding - Is the Olympic Bid going to reduce your arts funding? How was your Arts Grant this year? You might remember a petition opposing road charging making headlines a few months ago - we have an opportunity to do something similar to oppose the planned cuts to Arts Council funding.  On the Number 10 Downing Street website there is already a petition up and running which aims to: "Stop the chancellor using Lottery money to plug the funding gap in the 2012 Olympics." This is opposing the reallocation of resources to the Olympics of which the35% reduction of grants for the arts is a part.

Joanne Kaar papermaker from Caithness, stayed for a week's residency in Cromarty to work with children and young people on her "Message in a Bottle" project.   Working in conjunction with Artsplay Highland, Joanne visited Cromarty Primary, the Youth Club and Cromarty Action for Young People, creating images with face and hand-painting, beach photos and found objects for stunning effects which will all be part of a month-long exhibition at The Stables, Cromarty for July.

The Highland Constellation Co-reult na G'idhealtachd
A group of three artists have been chosen to work with The Royal Observatory Edinburgh and local schools to identify a new constellation in the skies above the region in a project run by The Highland Council's Exhibitions Unit to celebrate 2007, Scotland's Year of Highland Culture.   The project will bring together astronomy, digital art, craft and literature.

Inverness Features Six Cities Design Festival Exhibitions
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery is presenting two exhibitions during May and June which are part of the Scottish Executive £3million funded Six Cities Design Festival.   Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness are participating in the Festival which is aimed at celebrating and raising awareness of the value of design and creativity.

Wick High Media Studies Group Produce Charity CD
Students of Grant Mackenzie's 6th year Media Studies class have produced a 5 track EP intended to raise funds for the School's Special Education Unit.  The EP contains all original material from three groups.

Highland 2007 Announce InvernessFest Fringe Events Offered Funding
Highland 2007 announced funding for 24 events and projects as part of InvernessFest Fringe celebrations.   InvernessFest is a two week long celebration of traditional and contemporary culture in Inverness taking place between 15 and 29 July.

The short list for the 2007 Highland Children's Book Awards has been announced so over the next couple of months, primary and secondary school pupils will be busy reading the entries and voting for their favourites.   The winning books will be announced during a special event before schools break up for the summer holidays.

Launch of the Neil Gunn Writing Competition
Cash prizes for aspiring writers are being offered as The Highland Council launches the 2007 Neil Gunn Writing Competition.   Organised by The Highland Council and the Neil M Gunn Memorial Trust this premier writing competition is open to both adult and school age writers from all over the UK.

The Highland Council today (Monday 2 April 2007) announced Morrison Construction as an Event Partner to the Highland Promise - An Gealladh Mòr - the year long programme of activity being run in schools throughout the Highlands as part of Highland 2007.   The Highland Promise is a unique programme that provides each of the 29 Community School Groups (secondary plus feeder primaries) in the Highlands with a budget of approximately £20,000 and a menu of more than 100 activity options.

The country's enterprise agencies are inviting anyone involved in the Scottish music community to submit ideas about how they think the new Scottish Music Futures Fund should be invested.   Last month, the Scottish Executive allocated £500,000 to Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to set up a business development fund to help cultivate the music industry in Scotland - supporting the 'music stars of tomorrow'.

Three groups of young Highland musicians have recently performed at two venues in the Highlands attracting audiences in excess of 800 people and the commendation of a Scottish composer.   In the performances, the Highland Schools Wind Band, Highland Youth String Orchestra and Highland Regional Youth Orchestra showcased the amount of extremely talented and motivated young musicians being trained in Highland schools.

Go To Ireland for Five Days With the Melvich Gaelic Choir
The Melvich Gaelic Choir are competing in the Pan Celtic Festival in Derry, Ireland this year and have booked a speical plane from Wick to Derry.   The choir fly out on Tuesday 10th April and return on Sunday 15th April 2007 from Wick Airport.

Scottish Awards 2007 Arts & Business Scotland has opened nominations for the Arts & Business Scottish Awards, which will take place at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre on 19 September 2007.   The Awards encourage, acknowledge and celebrate exemplary partnerships between businesses and arts organisations.
