SUNDOWE WINNER OF THE HIGHLAND QUEST FOR A NEW MUSICAL WRITTEN BY JOHN, GERRY AND JAMES KIELTY AT THE ASSEMBLY ROOMS, WICK FRI 25 JAN 8.00PM SAT 26 JAN 2.30PM & 8.00PM The winner of The Highland QUEST for a New Musical, Sundowe, is visiting Wick for a series of performances as part a Highland wide tour in January and February 2008.   Filmed for the major BBC2 TV series MacMusical, The Highland QUEST has been a two year, international search to create a contemporary musical for a modern Scottish audience.

International Playwrighting Symposium - Autumn 2008
Wick in Caithness sits at the heart of an ancient trade route which links Iceland with the oldest parliament in the world, Sweden with its modern culture of design and excellence, Norway where Stavanger2008 is the European Capital of Culture and the Faroe Islands where the chain dance which brings the entire community together and was instrumental in preserving the Faroese language.   Grey Coast will draw on all these influences and the Nordic commitment to social justice to explore new dramatic forms informed by our shared cultural heritage.

Nòs Ùr Competition Calls For Applications
A competition has been launched this week which celebrates songs from Celtic and Scots language communities.  Singers and song-writers are invited to send entries to Nòs Ùr - the first song contest to be held in Inverness as part of four regional finals held across Europe.

Highland 2007 - ThreeSixFive Winner
The winner of the Highland 2007 ThreeSixFive photography competition, Jake Threadgould, received his prize from Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, at the Highland 2007 Highland Portrait's event in Eden Court (Friday 11 January 2008).   Highland 2007 in association with Fin Macrae Photography launched the exciting project to record life in the Highlands and Islands in January 2007.

This Saturday (12 January 2008) The Highland Council presents Highland Lights ~ Solais na Gaidhealtachd, the grand finale to Highland 2007 in Inverness and a great start to the New Year in the Highland capital.   Linda Fabiani, Minister for Culture will lead the magical, musical Torchlight Procession starting on Huntly Street at 7pm with some spectacular fire surprises! Minister for Culture Linda Fabiani said: "I am delighted to join the Highland 2007 closing celebrations.

Still Time To Apply For The Cultural Bridges Fund
The Cultural Bridges Fund (CBF) will make £30,000 available during an 18 month period to encourage greater understanding across cultures in Highland.   The Fund will provide grants for projects or programmes which promote improved community relations between new residents, minority ethnic community groups and the wider community in the Highlands.

Fiona Mackenzie, The Highland Council's Mairi Mhòr Gaelic song Fellow, based in Dingwall, will be travelling to Bonn, Germany, this weekend to sing Gaelic Carols at the Kulturzentrum Theatre.   The Mairi Mhòr Gaelic Song Fellowship recently launched the world's first Scottish Gaelic Christmas album, Duan Nollaig in cooperation with Greentrax Records and Fiona will be performing several of the tracks at the Kulturzentrum Theatre in Bonn on Saturday 22nd December 2007.

A Gaelic Christmas in Glasgow
The world's first Scottish Gaelic Christmas album will be showcased in concert on Monday 10th December in Glasgow.   Tracks from the ground breaking Duan Nollaig CD will be covered in the concert including an interesting and innovative version of Leonard Cohen's song 'Alleluia', which was made popular by Jeff Buckley and featured in the film Shrek, now translated into Gaelic by Inverness's Eilidh Mackenzie.

KATE DICKIE - SENDING OUT THE RIGHT SIGNS FOR DEAF DRAMA
BAFTA winning actress Kate Dickie, Patron to Glasgow-based theatre company Solar Bear, sends out an open invitation to the Launch of Scotland's first Deaf Youth Theatre (DYT).   All details will be revealed on the actual Launch night of the Deaf Youth Theatre on Wednesday 10th January 2008 from 6- 8pm at Scottish Youth Theatre [AT] The Old Sheriff Court, 105 Brunswick Street, Glasgow where parents and budding young deaf actors, and those interested in other aspects of theatre, are invited to come along and find out what the programme consists of.

ESSENTIAL SCOTTISH OPERA - Coming To Wick and Other Places In Scotland
15 January - 16 February 2008 Scottish Opera's tour "Essential Scottish Opera" is set to travel to fifteen venues the length and breadth of Scotland in 2008.  Opening in East Kilbride's Village Theatre on 15 January, four singers, accompanied by pianist Ian Shaw, will tour to Arran, Beauly, Campbeltown, Carrbridge, Castle Douglas, Findhorn, Glenuig, Greenock, Jedburgh, Midmar, Mull, Strathmiglo, Torridon and Wick performing a delightful programme of operatic highlights.

Cridhe na Gaidhealtachd - Craft in the Highlands
Cridhe na Gaidhealtachd - Craft in the Highlands: A showcase for Highland 2007, Scotland's Year of Highland Culture A free exhibition celebrating the work of Highland craft makers will open at the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 6 December and run until Sunday 6 January 2008.   The exhibition is divided into sections which represent some of the craft projects developed to celebrate Highland 2007, Scotland's year of Highland culture.

Call For Artists - Open Studios Event In 2008
CALL FOR ARTISTS Highlands Open Studios are looking for new members for the Open Studios event in 2008.  Dates for the Open Week in 2008 are May 31st - June 8th when members will throw open their doors to visitors to have a look round their studios and learn more about the artists work.

RSAMD Scottish Traditional Music Graded Exams - November 2007 - Looking ahead to Spring 2008
We had a successful debut exam session on Monday 22 October 2007, taking place as part of Fèis RSAMD.   Amid all sorts of concerts, tuition for young people in piping, Gaelic song, fiddling, harp-playing and more, candidates from as far afield as Shetland came to take graded exams in Scots fiddle and accordion.

Progress towards set up of Creative Scotland
Speaking in Parliament, Minister for Culture Linda Fabiani said: "The Creative Scotland Bill will establish the amalgamated body which will cultivate and support the best of Scottish arts and creativity and will build on the successes of the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen.   "I believe that government should not arbitrate on artistic decisions.
