Thirteen of the Highland's most talented young musicians will gather at Drumossie Hotel, Inverness on Monday 22 June as they complete for the title 'Highland Young Musician of the Year 2009' The competition is open to all those who are currently members of any of the Highland Regional Music Groups. The competitors come from Thurso High School, Portree High School, Tain Royal Academy, Dingwall Academy and Millburn, Culloden and Charleston Academies.

Firmly poised for future success, two final year students at Gray's School of Art are anticipating the launch of their Degree Show this Friday (12 June 2009) basking in the knowledge that their work has already been credited by some of the major national players within their chosen fields. Craig Shepherd (42), a painter who is originally from Ellon and now resides in Fordoun, has been named runner up for the prestigious Scottish International Education Trust (SIET) Visual Arts Award.

The main event will be in Inverness from the 17th to 20th of June.

The North Highland Archive (Caithness) is based in Wick Library. For the summer months, archivist Gail Inglis will be hosting a monthly session at Caithness Horizons in Thurso, enabling those on the west side of the county to dip into the vast resource.

Highland Culture Programme The revised guidelines and application form for the Highland 2007 Legacy Programme are now available on the home page of www.highland2007.com Please note that the name of the programme has been changed to the Highland Culture Programme. The next deadline for the fund will be August 7th 2009.

26 - 28 June 2009 Wick HarbourFest Committee, organisers of last year's very successful HarbourFest'07, have announced that they will be arranging another community event in 2009 which will further develop interest in the maritime and fishing heritage of Caithness. The festival will feature the return to Telford's harbour of a heritage fishing fleet and a re-enactment of the Herring Queen Festival and crowning, last held in Wick in 1953.

There will be a prize for the best story and the best picture from age groups Primary 1-2, 3-4 and 5-7 .
30th May to 27th June 2009 At St Fergus Gallery, Sinclair Terrace, Wick Upstairs In Wick Library Precious Cargo 2009 is Scotland's Year of Homecoming and the calendar's theme of migration, boats and the sea reflects this. The exhibition has been designed by Brodie Nairn and Nicky Burns from Glasstorm in Tain as an innovative installation of closed Cargo boxes, one of which opens every day over the festive period to reveal a new object or contemporary 'souvenir' of the Highlands which travellers to lands across the sea might have cherished to remind them of 'home'.

A national building company has entered into a commercial sponsorship partnership with The Highland Council to support the Highland Culture Programme. Building and maintenance firm, Rok, is backing the programme, which was created as a long term legacy of Highland 2007 to support events and projects showcasing Highland culture.

Caithness and Sutherland photographers are being encouraged to get creative for a prestigious digital photography competition which has been launched to celebrate innovation in the Highlands and Islands. Anyone with a camera and a creative eye is being invited to send entries to 'Innovation Exposure' which has been organised by Fusion, an organisation supporting entrepreneurial business, and Distance Lab, the digital media and communication technologies research institute.

Session A9 Take To The Road Again In June "Session A9 and Beyond", Session A9 are Adam Sutherland, Brian Mcalpine, Charlie Mckerron, David "chimp" Robertson, Gordon Gunn, Kevin Henderson and Marc Clement. Over the years Session A9 have been described as a "Scottish super group", "The best band to have come out of Scotland in 100 years", "Tighter than James Brown" and an "Amazing Festival band", great praise indeed for a band formed through informal music sessions up and down the arterial Scottish road, the A9, culminating in their first ever tour in 2001.
