Although there are some historical records of various Viking exploits, and evidence of the previous Viking presence in numerous place names, there is presently no specific local event held in recognition of this historical period in the development of Caithness.   Da Doonie Day has therefore been organised by Thurso Rotary Club and Thurso High School Interact Club to celebrate the Scottish and Viking heritages of the Far North.

MASSED CHOIRS AND PIPEBANDS MARCH
Caithness residents are set for a most spectular sight on Saturday at 1030am when all the choirs, who have taken part in the Royal National M�d, gather and walk en mass through the town led by the pipebands.   The massed choirs will sing together in four part harmonies and signifies that the Royal National M�d is over for another year.

Mod - THE FINAL FLING
It is the big final night party on Friday and everyone is invited.   So come along to Thurso High School at 1000pm to say goodbye to the Royal National Mod and dance until 5am! Ceilidh music will be provided by Skipinnish and will showcase, singer Rachel Walker as well as local talent Clapshot.

Council to mark 25 years of Gaelic Medium Education
Members of The Highland Council's Gaelic Committee have welcomed plans to celebrate twenty five years of Gaelic Medium Education provision in the Highlands.   Funding to support the Council's plans has also been warmly welcomed from B�rd na G�idhlig's Gaelic Language Act Implementation Fund.

F�is Ghallaibh Junior Folk Group A are winners of the Folk Group Competition for under 13 year olds at M�d Ghallaibh 2010.   Sponsored by The Highland Council and Fujitsu, the Folk Group is an open category of competition for which groups have to sing two songs of their own choice with accompaniments of musical instruments.

Eden Court marks the spot on the map for Highland pupils' art exhibition An art exhibition on the theme of maps created by pupils from six Highland secondary schools goes on show this week at Eden Court, Inverness.   "Mapping our land" is the title of the exhibition that is being exhibited at Eden Court until 28th October and then at Lochaber High School during the first week in November.

CALL FOR MUSICIANS TO TAKE TO THE STREETS
The local organising committee are calling on all musicians to take to the streets for sessions during the Royal National M�d 2010.   Sessions are an informal way of gathering musicians together to play traditional music.

Highland Young Guitarist Winner Announced
Following a successful afternoon of accomplished and musical guitar playing from all the entrants to the first highland Young Guitarist Competition on Saturday, the judging panel were delighted to award the runner-up prize to Dingwall Academy pupil Ross Turner from Muir of Ord, with the first prize going to Michael Ferrie, a pupil at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School who originally hails from Callander.   Both Ross and Michael will now have the chance to perform, perhaps using the beautiful guitars they won at the competition, during the Ullapool Guitar Festival which runs from 8th - 10th October.

It's A Dog's Life for Dogs and their owners in Caithness
The Thurso High School Drama club have been working hard to create a play for pooches and their owners.   'A Dog's Life' is a fun performance with dog themed songs - such as 'Scooby Doo, Where Are You?' and 'How Much Is That Doggy In The Window?' - and short sketches including 'You Thew the Ball, You Go Get It!'.

'Renewable Theatre' - an original Caithness Horizons Project
THE PUBLICATION LAUNCH OF TWO PLAYS by GEORGE GUNN 'Egil, Son of the Night Wolf' and 'Atomic City' were both conceived, written, rehearsed and produced in Caithness, before going on national tour with Grey Coast Theatre Company.  Actors will read rehearsed scenes from both plays, and copies of the plays will be available for sale on the night - COME AND GET YOUR SIGNED COPY! New Highland Music Day
Young musicians from all over the Highlands will be taking part in the first Highland Music Day on Friday 1 October in Inverness.   The Highland Council has created this new annual day of workshops and group playing for musicians of all levels of ability who attend Highland primary or secondary schools.

BLAS ATTRACTS POLITICAL AND PUBLIC SUPPORT
Highlands and Islands MSP Rob Gibson has lodged a motion at the Scottish Parliament which congratulates the Blas Festival for its successful celebration of the region's Gaelic-based music and culture.   The motion comes as a spot survey of 100 festival-goers revealed 97% of respondents think the festival is important for its contribution to Highland culture.

Great Opportunity For Young Guitarists
The quest is on to find the Highland's most talented young guitarists with an exciting opportunity to perform during the Ullapool Guitar Festival.   The Highland Council, in association with the Ullapool Guitar Festival, have launched a new competition- Highland Young Guitarist 2010 - and invite guitarists who attend Highland Schools to come along to the Spectrum Centre in Inverness on Saturday 25 September to perform a solo programme of music of their choice in front of an audience.

Wicked Drama Club for Kidz!!!
A new drama club for children in Primary 4 - 7 in the Wick area kicks off on Monday, 30th August at the Wick Youth Club.   Eden Court Drama Worker David Hunter will be co-ordinating the 'WICKed Drama Club for Kidz' which will run weekly until the end of the first term from 6pm to 7.30pm.
