Second Annual Creative Music Week - ConcertThumbnail for article : Second Annual Creative Music Week - Concert
North Highland Connections Concert of music composed by young composers taking part in the second annual Creative Music Week, 8th - 13th July.  The concert will include works by the resident tutors, David Horne and Stuart MacRae, performed by a chamber ensemble drawn from the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, directed by Nicholas Cleobury.

HI~Arts Final Curtain On The Organisation
At a meeting held on 27th June the Board of HI~Arts, the cultural development agency for the Highlands and Islands, formally resolved that the company should be wound up, and that William Young CA should be commissioned to implement the winding up and be authorised to organise the meetings of members and creditors necessary to appoint a Liquidator.   As noted in the previous Board statement of 5th April 2013, both HIE and Creative Scotland provided transition funding for HI~Arts for the financial year 2012/13, but subsequent strategic and structural changes in both organisations have meant that past funding arrangements would not be continued beyond the first quarter of 2013/14 .

North Highland Connections - July
The busy and varied events programme of North Highland Connections continues in July, with two residential activities which include opportunity for local involvement.   The second Creative Music Week for young composers will take place at Ham House, Caithness, from 8th to 14th July.

New opportunity for film, animation and TV
The Scottish Government will exploit every opportunity to establish Scotland as a global centre of excellence for film making, animation and television production, Fiona Hyslop said today.   Speaking ahead of a reception she will host tonight for film makers, industry representatives, funders and sponsors, the Culture Secretary said the government is firmly committed to doing all it can to support a sustained increase in production, including through the film studio delivery group set up to actively pursue proposals for a new film and TV studio .

Music group report published
The Government’s Instrumental Music Group has made 17 recommendations to build on current successes and Scotland’s position as a leading nation in music.   The report makes a number of recommendations including: There should be a general principle that individual circumstances should not be a barrier to access instrumental music tuition Authorities should review their charging policies and concessionary schemes to ensure that pupils in their area are not prevented from learning a musical instrument There should be greater collaboration between local authorities in the provision, purchase, repair and sharing of instruments and the delivery of instrumental music tuition Authorities should seek more sponsorship for instrumental music provision Research should be commissioned to examine the contribution of instrumental music learning to Scotland’s economy and culture and to learning and development The 2003 guidance for instrumental teaching should be updated The Scottish Government should set up an Instrumental Music Implementation Group to deliver these recommendations.

Tuition charges dropped for Highland SQA music students
Highland music students in secondary school years 4, 5 and 6 studying for an SQA will no longer be charged instrumental music instruction by The Highland Council.   Members of The Highland Council have agreed to drop charges from August 2013.

Lyth Arts Centre Open 12 - 5 pm daily 1st July - 31st August 2013 Adults: £3 OAPs: £2 Children, Students, Unwaged: £1 Alistair Cook This project "McArthur's Store" was created by photographer, architect and artist Alistair Cook, who spent the summer of 2012 in a building on the quay at Dunbar used by fishermen while mending their creels.  He used wet plate collodion photography, a process concocted by Englishman Fred Scott Archer in 1851 to produce portraits of Dunbar men and their families.

Make Works has announced plans to more closely connect industry and design; starting with a three-month expedition to find makers and manufacturers across the country.   Make Works, made up of designers, Fi Scott and Vana Coleman are going on a 3 month tour of Scotland this summer to find and visit local factories, foundries and workshops on a quest to find the people, tools and machines that can enable designers, artists and entrepreneurs to fabricate their work locally.

ING Discerning Eye 2013: Call for Entries

Deadline For Council Culture Funding Applications
Community groups and cultural organisations are being invited to apply to The Highland Council for a share of the Highland Culture Fund which is a one-off grant fund of £100,000.   The Highland Culture Fund aims to promote the Highlands as a great place to live and visit by showcasing the unique and special nature of Highland culture past, present and future.

The only Caithness person to be mentioned in this years Neil Gunn Wrrting competition was Logan Mackay from Castletown Primary school.   "Marshmallow Mission" was one of the 'Commended' entries in the Primary Schools section of the Neil Gunn Writing Competition, 2013.

Eden Court, plan B and the Highland Council are delighted to announce a series of four dance commissions and residencies as part of the dance Strategy for the Highlands.  Submissions are being sought for four separate projects as outlined below: ‘Out with the old….’ Youth Dance Residency We are seeking an innovative and exciting company or choreographer to develop a new dance piece with a group of young dancers, aged 13-21 years.

Musical Instruments In Schools
The first musical instruments purchased as part of the £1 million investment by the Scottish Government are beginning to arrive in schools across Scotland.   Learning Minister Alasdair Allan today visited Tynewater Primary School, which is one of the first schools to receive their new instruments.
