North Highland Connections - Latest Events
North Highland Connections continues, this week and next, to promote cultural programmes with a strong youth bias.  Following the highly successful mini-tour by Italian virtuoso pianist, Gesualdo Coggi, in Caithness and Sutherland, young people again dominate the promotions in the next two weeks.

The Highland Council is delighted to present Spirit of Air, a body of work by leading willow artist Lizzie Farey which opens at the Iona Gallery in Kingussie on Saturday (7 May) before touring the Highlands.   Spirit of Air presents a new body of expressive willow works by Lizzie Farey including a series of large scale wall-based and suspended works.

Young Musicians Audition Day
28th May 2011 is Regional Music Groups Audition Day which will see 400 young musicians from all over the Highlands meet up in Inverness to take part in workshops, performance groups and individual auditions.   The Highland Council's Music Development Officer Norman Bolton said: "The audition day is a vital part of the selection process for our eight Regional music groups which are run as an extension to the work of the Council's Instrumental Tuition Service.

Fundraising Concert For Japan Announced
The Highland Council has announced details of a special concert which will take place on Easter Monday in Eden Court Theatre in Inverness to raise funds for relief work in Japan.   Organised in partnership with Eden Court Theatre, the Inverness Business Community and the Highland capital's four Rotary Clubs; the April 25th concert will feature one of Japan's favourite orchestral ensembles Tatsuya Yamauchi and Japan New Romantics.

HIE Seeks Creative Future For John O'Groats
The first in a series of tenders to create the future design of one of the North's most iconic visitor destinations is being advertised.   Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), supported by project funding from the Scottish Government and the European Community Highland LEADER 2007-2013 programme, is searching for artists to lead on a number of temporary and permanent art projects for John O'Groats.

The statues, Faith, Hope and Charity that once adorned the roof of an Inverness High Street draper's store and then spent over fifty years in the ownership of a private collector in Orkney have been installed this week on the banks of the River Ness.   The final piece of the project - the head of statue Charity - that takes centre stage was installed this morning.

Government Funding Help For Traditional Music School
News that the Scottish Government is prepared to commit £200,000 a year from 2012/13 to 2014/15 to provide funding to help broaden the remit of the National Centre for Excellence in Traditional Music has been welcomed by The Highland Council, who host the centre in Plockton High School, and the West Highland College, who are potential partners in the future funding of the centre.   The Highland Council Leader, Councillor Michael Foxley, who has been actively involved in discussions to find a funding package that will ensure the long-term future of the centre, said: "I am delighted that as part of the overall package required to ensure the long-term future of the centre that the Scottish Government has provided funding through a partnership with the West Highland College.
