Musicians to meet up for Highland Music Day
It's a year since the inaugural Highland Music Day and this years event on Thursday 6 October will see 570 young people from all over Highland arrive in Inverness to participate in a day of workshops and group playing for musicians of all levels of ability who attend Highland primary or secondary schools.   Seven different venues throughout the city will be used to host activities for young musicians of strings, brass, woodwind, bagpipes and pipe band drumming, traditional music and percussion.

Highland Archaeology Festival, 1- 16 October 2011
A new packed programme of special events has been launched for the eighteenth Highland Archaeology Festival, which gets underway on 1 October for two weeks.   Over one hundred events, most of which are free, are included in the programme which celebrates the archaeology, history, landscape and culture of Highland.

Blas celebrates half a century of Fèisean in style
The culmination of the equivalent of nearly half a century of work by the Fèis movement in two key Highland areas will be celebrated from one of the highest points in the land as part of Blas 2011 which begins this weekend.   Festival fans can join Fèis Spè and their friends on the evening of Friday 9 September as Blas 2011 gets under way in celebrating 21 years of inspiration and opportunity with the highest gig in Blas! Part of a remarkable evening's entertainment involves a scenic train ride up Cairngorm to the Ptarmigan Restaurant to see Fèis Spè participants, past and present, showcase their outstanding achievements.

More Regional Gaelic Mods Heading To Caithness
Caithness National Mod Leads to Increased Frequency of Regional Mod in Caithness One of the direct benefits hoped for following the county's successful hosting of the Royal National Mod in October last year was an increase in the frequency of the regional Mod being hosted in Caithness.   At the Annual General Meeting of the various committees representing the Caithness and Sutherland Mod, held in Bonar Bridge on Saturday (27th August) a proposal was put forward to increase the frequency of Caithness hosting the regional festival which attracts many visitors each year.

Highland pupils first to perform WWF musical in Scotland
WWF is marking its 50th anniversary in style this year with the Scottish premiere of its musical 'One Sun One World'.   The piece has been specially commissioned by the environmental charity and will be performed for the first time in Scotland on Saturday 19 November at the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort Hotel at 2pm.

Traditional Music Classes - Clasaichean Ceòl Traidiseanta Inbhir Nis
The Highland Council is inviting people of all ages to join in traditional music, song and dance classes which are currently taking place in Inverness until the 24 November 2011 Places are still available in some of the 10-week series of classes which start on Monday 5 September Twenty three classes are taking place in four different venues in Inverness area with some 200 people of all ages enjoying tuition.   A taster session will be on Tuesday 30th August in Crown Primary School from 7-8.30pm for people to come and try, fiddle, mandolin, whistle, banjo and guitar.

Caithness International Science Festival - Photography Competition Science O3, which runs the annual Caithness International Science Festival, is holding a photography competition, based on next year's Festival theme of "Energy in Caithness".  We've received some excellent entries so far and the competition is open until September 2, 2011.

Local Artists Invited To Weekend Painting Residence
North Highland Connections Promotes the Third Residency of The Prince's Drawing School Students and teaching staff from The Prince's Drawing School will again be in residence at the North Lands Creative Glass Centre in Lybster, from 1st August, for ten days.  This year, as a major development made possible by the additional support of a Highland LEADER grant, the outreach is being expanded to include two days when local artists have an opportunity to take part in the event, and there will be a daily morning class.

Creative Scotland Backs 2011 Blas Festival
The seventh Blas festival in the Highlands and Islands has received a major boost with the confirmation of £50,000 investment from Creative Scotland.   The investment from the national leader for Scotland's arts, screen and creative industries has enabled the organisers of Blas, which has established itself as the premier event celebrating all that is good about the Gaelic language and culture of the Highlands, to offer a packed programme of events which features top performers and two new commissions, one celebrating the culture of Scotland's islands.
