North Lands Creative Glass - Annual Master Class Programme
Details of the North Lands Creative Glass Annual Master Class programme have now been announced.  Master Classes will be running between 29 August to 19 September and the International Conference 'Give-and-Take' will take place on Saturday 8, Sunday 9 September 2012.

Boost For Film Competition
MG ALBA's flagship FilmG project has been boosted by the Scottish Government announcement of £30,000 of funding for the national short film competition.   The funding was announced during a visit by the First Minister to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland's Gaelic college, on the Isle of Skye.

Scotland Can Make It
A celebration of Scottish design and manufacturing, Scotland Can Make It! is a major new exhibition, coming to the People's Palace in Glasgow ahead of a film which will tour Scotland in 2013.   Last year, Scottish curatorial team Panel, working with Creative Scotland, put out a call for Scottish artists and designers to create new Scottish souvenirs.

Cultural Collections To Get Building Boost
One the Highland's best-loved cultural attractions this week received a boost as The Highland Council awarded a £3.25 million pound contract to build a state-of-the-art new museum store and curatorial centre at the award winning Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore.   The building, which is to be built by Robertson, the Elgin based infrastructure, support services and construction group, will when completed in 2014 be home to the internationally significant Highland Folk Museum collection.

Caithness Horizons Secures Funding For "Iconic Artists in Iconic Places" Programme Exciting things are afoot at four Scottish Museums as they embark upon projects with acclaimed Scottish Artists who will draw inspiration from - and cast a new perspective on - their Collections and buildings.   These new creative collaborations are the first to be awarded through Iconic Artists in Iconic Places - a collaborative project by Museums Galleries Scotland and Creative Scotland to celebrate Scotland's icons past and present by enabling Artists to be inspired by Museum Collections, historic sites, and Scotland's intangible cultural heritage, also known as living culture.

A blast of top musicians from all over the world will head for the Empire Theatre at Eden Court in Inverness when Blas 2012, the Highlands' premier Gaelic festival, kicks off in a few weeks' time.   This year's festival will run from Friday September 7 until the 15th and will feature a wide variety of stage performances from the exotic to the exciting.

Activities at Borgie Forest For 4 - 14 year olds
Farr Edge Summer Holiday for 4-14 year old Tuesday 24th, Wednesday 25th & Thursday 26th July Art, Storytelling & Drama The traditional local-ish story of Assipattle and the Giant Stoorworm for all those bairns from 4 years old up until the 14 year olds with a dragon to be built and all kinds of fun props and stories and drama games with roles as horses and fishes and maidens and simple young men who can solve complicated problems and Kings and sparky Princesses and stinky scary scaly Dragons… Three days in the woods with nature and creative activities and a final performance.   Okay - it is self promotion - but for a fun three day event for 4-14 year olds in the fabulous Borgie Forest Cabins.

Young Composers Workshop In Caithness

Estrella To Gig On World's Shortest Street
Highland Rock Band, ESTRELLA are set to play an acoustic gig on the WORLD'S shortest street on Friday 22 June.   The Guinness Book of World Records declared Wick's Ebenezer Place (in the far North of Scotland) as the world's shortest street in 2006 and the band will play a 15 minute set outside its only address, No 1 Bistro, Mackay's Hotel but at 6ft 9 inches in length there is no room for another building in this street! Murray Lamont of Mackay's Hotel said "We are delighted that Estrella has chosen to play a gig outside one of the county's most historical landmarks.

Mary Hamada Parker - Exhibition
An exhibition by local artist Mary Hamada Parker at Caithness Horizons from 23rd June until 29th July 2012 The next exhibition in the Gallery at Caithness Horizons will feature a collection of work by local artist Mary Hamada Parker.   Mary Hamada Parker was born in Yokohama then schooled locally in Thurso.

What's On In June at Caithness Horizons
Tuesday 29th May - Saturday 30th June On display in our café, Caithness Astronomy Group Exhibition of photographs of Aurora.   Sunday 3rd June 2pm till late Skinandi's nightclub host their annual charity fundraiser again this year and we've been lucky enough to be part of it, ourselves and Thurso Youth Club will be hosting the event alongside Skinandi's to raise money for community projects.

Have you had a closer look at your local café's table decorations or at what else may be on the shelves in your shop lately? If you live on the north coast of Scotland, it might be worth a look, as Strathnaver Museum's artist-in-residence, Joanne B Kaar, has been inspired to make 200 paper shoes and hide them in mail boxes and public places from Balnakeil to John O'Groats.  She made the shoe drop last week.
