Vote for Brandon McPhee
October 2012, what a month for Caithnesss own Brandon McPheeOctober 1st saw the release of the October edition of the Box & Fiddle Magazine (a monthly magazine published by the National Association of Accordion and Fiddle Clubs) a full front cover photo of Brandon and a 3 page editorial about his life in music and the Brandon McPhee Trio voted Guest Artist of the Year winning a BAFFI award presented at a ceremony in July at Perth, also nominated CD of the year Brandons latest recording The Flying Scots.  Saturday 13th October saw Brandon in Dunoon competing in the Royal National Mod in the senior open accordion championship taking first place with the adjudicator congratulating him on a faultless performance.

This extraordinary piece, which hasn't been performed in Scotland for almost ten years, is regarded as one of the composer's seminal works.  It's an extravagant, disturbing and occasionally very funny depiction of the madness of King George III.

Supporting Scotlands Museums And Galleries
Scotlands museums and galleries are set to receive almost 50 million from the Scottish Government in 2013-14, the Culture Secretary has announced.   In a speech to museum chiefs from across the UK, Fiona Hyslop confirmed the Scottish Governments continued support for the sector which, according to industry figures, contributes 662 million to the Scottish economy and supports more than 3,800 jobs.

Artists In Residence Project
The Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability (ACES): Artists in residence project Environmental Conflicts With support from Creative Futures, The Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability (ACES) based at The University of Aberdeen, is hosting residencies for up to six creative practitioners to work with academics to explore issues arising from Environmental Conflicts.   These residencies offer an exciting opportunity to work with experts in the fields of environmental sustainability, food security, conservation and conflict resolution.

Funding To Promote Events In Scotland
EventScotland, the national events agency, which was established in 2003 with the aim of strengthening and promoting Scotlands events industry, has announced that the National Events Programme round 23 is open to applications.   The National Events Programme complements the International Funding Programme and plays an integral role in developing domestic tourism across Scotland.

Live Music Kit Launched For Live Acts
Musicians Union launches Live Music Kit to help explain the Live Music Act .  The Musicians Union has published a handbook giving advice on how the Live Music Act, which came into effect in October 2012, will affect venues and performers when hosting live music events for audiences of fewer than 200 people.

Tore Gallery - The Final Days
OUR FINAL EXHIBITION The final Christmas Exhibition at Tore is now largely hung, and from 10th November all the new work will be on view There's an emphasis on smaller paintings, and we also welcome several new artists including CATRIONA MACEACHEN with her jewel-coloured seascapes and sunsets (also lovely calendars) and LESLEY MURRAY who brings a most interesting collection of gifts and crafts inspired by books, both recycled and "upcycled".  These defy description and must be seen! As always, lots to tempt you, and a visit to Tore might actually make Christmas shopping a pleasure! CHRISTMAS CONCERT SUNDAY 9th DECEMBER, 3 pm and 5 pm (2 performances) JAMES ROSS directs the singers of MUSICK FYNE and musicians of MARVEL OF PERU in a traditional Christmas Concert featuring 18th/19th century carols and plenty of chances to sing along, fuelled by the best mulled wine and home made mince pies ever.

Caithness Horizons Events In November
Steve Macleod Exhibition in our Gallery 6th - 29th November Created over a period of several years Steve has produced a body of work that is inspired by the writings of Neil M Gunn.   Fascinated by the authors painterly and poetic descriptions of subject and environment - a world imagined and fictional, felt by the human spirit and yet, at the same time directly relating to the landscape of Caithness, its physicality and presence and sense of place.

Carnival Atmosphere Expected At Halloween Show
The Inverness Winter Events Programme gets underway this weekend with one of the biggest fancy dress events staged in the Scotland - the Ness Islands Halloween Show.   Since the event was first staged in 2009, the Ness Islands Children's Show has not only inspired hundreds of families to dress up each year in order to help The Highland Council scare away an annual invasion of ghosts, beasties and unmentionables; it has also been adopted by revellers as the perfect excuse to create a spectacular Halloween Carnival in the pubs, clubs and streets of the city.
