'Gillie Mor 2012' - Celebrating the folk culture of Caithness & Sutherland. Thursday 29th-Saturday 30th March

Following the success of last year's event, we're planning a follow-up three-day programme of story and song. Folklorist and singer Margaret Bennett, and traveller-storyteller Essie Stewart are back, embodying as they both do the spirit of what Hamish Henderson called the 'Carrying Stream' of folk culture . In his talk 'A' the Bairns O' Adam' Dr Fred Freeman will explain why Hamish Henderson - 'The Gillie Mor' himself - is the figurehead for our Caithness-based festival.

Folk phenomenon Dick Gaughan will join writer George Gunn in schools song-writing workshops, before appearing with everyone else at the end-of-festival ceilidh in the Pentland Hotel, Thurso. Thurso-born Kevin Williamson is taking his one-man show 'Robert Burns: Not in My Name' to his home town, joining George Gunn for a dynamic evening of radical poetry. Cultural crofter Nancy Nicolson will entertain with her own blend of wit, music and charm.

Come and be part of the 'Carrying Stream'. We're looking for people of all ages to sign up for a variety of workshops during the three days of the festival and perform at the ceilidh.

New Dounreay Exhibition opening: Friday 6th April

Since the early days of construction in 1955 right through to the present day, Dounreay has had a dominant impact on the economic and social development of Caithness. The role that Dounreay has played in the history of Scotland has been recognised as being of national importance.

On 6th April 2012 Caithness Horizons will open an extension to its Dounreay exhibition, which has been developed to enable it to display more of its nationally important Dounreay Collection. Financial support for the development of this exhibition has kindly been provided by:
