The Strokestown International Poetry Festival is pleased to announce that, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Colmcille, the festival will again be offering valuable prizes for a poem in Irish or Scottish Gaelic. With a first prize of €4,000, the competition offers poets in these languages prizes at a level which is usually offered only to poets writing in English. There will be a second prize of €2000 and a third of €1000. A shortlist of six will be announced, and each shortlisted poet will receive at least €400 when they read at the festival in Strokestown (30th April to 2nd May, 2010), when the winners will be announced.

This year's judges are poets Aonghas MacNeacail from Scotland and Paddy Bushe from Ireland. The final date for entries is 5th February, 2010. With an entry fee of just €5 or £5 per poem, it is well worthwhile for any poet, or aspiring poet, to enter a good few poems. The odds on being shortlisted are very good! It's time to forget the "poor mouth" of Gaelic poetry, and for hundreds of poems to be sent to Strokestown!
