Best Night Yet For Open Mic Night In Thurso

26th September 2008

The Scotia Reviews 'Open mic' evenings at the Y- Not Bar in Thurso continue to grow in popularity and quality.

Once more the bar was full on Thursday evening to listen to various new talent from around Caithness.

The evening was started with a set of original songs by Graham Maharg who has recently been working with the Sherbert Fish, mixing Grahams unique voice and epic Jazz/Blues, Soul sound with some intricate guitar work and a hint of Rock. Graham's first Album 'The Colour Of Rain' can be found at Thurso music shop or via www.myspace.com/grahammaharg

They were followed by Memphis Jurisdiction a three piece country band. This fine band actually consists of three sisters Geraldine Williamson [Keyboard, vocals] Caroline Williamson [Bass, backing vocals] and Stephanie Williamson [Guitar, backing vocals]

The bands first showing at the 'open mic' was full of accomplished country sounds and style. They also have a CD out with their own original material called 'Skies the Limit' must be worth a listen. Catch them on bebo.com/memphis jurisdiction

Following shortly afterwards a great performance from another new band to 'Open Mic' ;

'3 Chords and The Truth' with Pam Sinclair, [vocals] Stuart Maitland [Acoustic Guitar]and Iann Maitland [Bass].

We had more entertainment from an open mic regular Donald Ross[vocals and guitar] who gave us some polished cover songs and preceded the final group of the night.

'Ivory Tower'. Consisting of Fraiser Bain and Les Cowley on guitars and Alison Birnie on vocals. Fraiser and Les are old hands to 'Open Mic' but a new combination with Alison perhaps brought some of their best performances with a stunning mixture of original and cover sounds to round off the evening.

The next open mic event will take place at the Y Not Bar Thurso 23rd October 9pm for more details or if you want to take part contact Ken 01847 821398
