Black Isle Words Festival: 31 August - 2 September
Stornoway's Faclan and the Black Isle Words Festival bring together world-class authors and poets to celebrate the inspiration distinctive landscapes have on literary work. Faclan showcases local writing as well as storytelling, song and drama in both English and Gaelic. Connect Music Festival

The inaugural Connect Music Festival takes place at the breathtaking surroundings of Inveraray Castle, Argyll. The event combines performances from Beastie Boys, Primal Scream, Björk and many more in a packed programme of music and entertainment. Venues across an area of almost 12,000 square miles will participate in Highland Open Studios Open Doors project. Half Life

Half Life is a major landscape work and first co-production between innovative arts charity NVA and the National Theatre of Scotland. Staged around Kilmartin Glen in Argyll, one of the world's richest prehistoric regions, the event offers day and night experiences revealing the dark but inspiring mindset of Scotland's early Neolithic inhabitants. Atmospheric installations based around key archaeological sites precede a powerful outdoor evening show, staged in a forest at the entrance to the glen. www.halflife.org.uk

UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championship

The biggest mountain bike event in the world is coming to Fort William, already an established venue in the UCI World Cup circuit, having hosted World Cup events since 2002. The World Championships will take this to a new level with 750 of the world's top riders competing over the week long festival.
