From 17 to 22 September 2013, Berlin will once again become the centre of the international art world. After a successful start last year, the second Berlin Art Week will entice collectors, key players in the art world, and all those interested in arts and culture to the German capital.

Beside the art fairs abc art berlin contemporary and PREVIEW BERLIN ART FAIR and top-notch exhibitions at renowned partner institutions such as Akademie der Künste, Berlinische Galerie, C/O Berlin, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (NGBK) e.V., for the first time this year alternative art projects will also be participating in Berlin Art Week, highlighting the variety, creativity, experimentation, and quality of Berlin as a cultural capital.

A jury—formed by artist Monica Bonvicini, art critic Claudia Wahjudi, and Kasper König, former director of Cologne's Museum Ludwig—selected a number of important contemporary art venues and off spaces to accompany the program of Berlin Art Week 2013. The art film festival Doku.ARTS, municipal galleries Galerie M and Kunstverein Tiergarten | Galerie Nord, self-run project spaces after the butcher, Autocenter, and Schinkel Pavillon, art-school initiatives Kleine Humboldt Galerie and Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, the artists' program Goldrausch, and the artist-in-residency program ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics will decisively enrich this year's Berlin Art Week.

The highlight of Berlin Art Week 2013 will be Painting Forever!, a collaboration among Berlinische Galerie, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, initiated by Berlin Senate, which explores contemporary painting in Berlin in a unique context showing work by a wide variety of artists. Participating artists include Franz Ackermann (Berlinische Galerie), Martin Eder, Michael Kunze, Anselm Reyle, Thomas Scheibitz, (Neue Nationalgalerie), Jeanne Mammen, Antje Majewski, Katrin Plavčak, and Giovanna Sarti (Deutsche Bank KunstHalle). The artist list of KW Institute for Contemporary Art will be announced in July.

Berlin Art Week 2013 will also include the awarding of the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst and an award from the Senate Chancellery-Cultural Affairs for artistic projects and initiatives in the realm of fine art.

With around 130 individual positions of contemporary art and an extensive auxiliary program, the sixth abc art berlin contemporary will be held from 20 to 22 September at Station at Gleisdreieck. Numerous young and established galleries from all over the world will present works by Nina Beier, Nina Canell, Thea Djordjaze, Mathew Hale, Christian Jankowski, Susanne Kriemann, Ryan McGinley, Michael Riedel, Robin Rhode, Ricarda Roggan, Tomas Saraceno, and Santiago Sierra, et al. The variety of performative and time-based works will create a lively, four-day program of performances, artist talks, music contributions, and special events in the whole site. The varied program will be rounded out by the art-book fair Miss Read as well as Upcoming Exhibitions, a program introduced by Shanaynay (Paris), in which a new exhibition produced and initiated by international project spaces will occur every two hours in abc's entrance area.

At PREVIEW BERLIN ART FAIR, around 80 international newcomers and established galleries present their offerings from 20 to 22 September, this year in a new location: Opernwerkstätten Berlin. With this relocation, PREVIEW BERLIN ART FAIR takes its inspiration from the artistic and creative tradition of opera workshops, transforming the location into a vibrant venue for contemporary art production. Under generous skylights, the international art scene will gather in large, column-free spaces—an ideal location for the presentation and reception of art. The proximity to the art district in Mitte and a central location between Naturkundemuseum and Nordbahnhof allow visitors convenient access and short travel distances during Berlin Art Week.

In addition, numerous Berlin galleries will be holding openings and special presentations and events during the week.

Berlin Art Week 2013 opens on 17 September with a large open-air event in Auguststrasse, Berlin-Mitte.

Again this year, a combi-ticket will be on offer for admission to all exhibition locations.
