Artist in Residence opportunities (x2) - Dance

22nd June 2013

4x4AiR: Dance, Body and the Environment

Artist in Residence opportunities for dance artists and choreographers

Bodysurf Scotland is pleased to offer two unique and challenging funded residencies, open to dance artists and choreographers in 2013-14.

Exploring themes of dance, body and the environment, the 4×4 Artist in Residence (AIR) programme is aimed at artists interested in working in non-theatre based locations and challenging environmental contexts. Working from the organisation’s base in the Universal Hall, Findhorn, the successful artists will be encouraged to critically examine their performance practice, reflecting upon their relationship with the natural environment and ecological systems.

4×4 AIR aims to contribute to and enhance the body of work that already exists in this field. Bodysurf Scotland feels that, in response to the pressing need to evolve our relationship with the natural environment, the time is right for artists to develop new work and ways of working that address this area.

Two artists will be selected for 4×4 AIR and an artist’s fee alongside a contribution to expenses, will be provided. Local specialist environmental advisors will be available to engage with and support the artists throughout the residency, offering a richer understanding of the natural environment.

Bodysurf Scotland is based within the Findhorn Ecovillage Community, a major international centre of personal and spiritual transformation and sustainable living. Bodysurf Scotland is part of a vibrant and thriving cultural infrastructure in Moray and The Highlands.

While it is critical for this residency to address issues around ecology and natural science, a cooperative outlook will also be important, in terms of what the artists feel they can bring to a place and how they feel they can contribute at a community level. Submitted proposals should take this into account.

Although 4×4 AIR will be based out of the Universal Hall, Findhorn, artists will be encouraged to explore sites and locations across Moray and the Highlands and Islands. Bodysurf Scotland would look favourably upon proposals from artists who aim to utilise the residency for the creation of new work, whether part-time over a number of months or within a shorter intensive period. Bodysurf Scotland will document the residencies, with input from the artists, creating mechanisms for the dissemination of working processes and outcomes.

Bodysurf Scotland is now welcoming proposals from artists for 4×4 AIR. Proposals should be in the form of a 500-1,000 word statement outlining the following:

i. Why you would like to take part in the residency

ii. How you would approach developing your practice during the residency

iii. What you would hope to achieve through the residency

iv. What you could bring to the residency, place and community

The deadline for applications is: 6th July 2013

Successful artists will receive a £1,000 artist fee and a contribution towards such expenses as accommodation, studio space, travel, materials and environmental expertise.

For more information or to receive an application pack, please telephone Bodysurf Scotland on 01309 691661 or email Project Manager Simon on simon[AT]bodysurfscotland.co.uk
