Caithness Horizons Events In November

5th November 2012

Steve Macleod Exhibition in our Gallery 6th - 29th November

Created over a period of several years Steve has produced a body of work that is inspired by the writings of Neil M Gunn.

Fascinated by the authors painterly and poetic descriptions of subject and environment - a world imagined and fictional, felt by the human spirit and yet, at the same time directly relating to the landscape of Caithness, its physicality and presence and sense of place. The body of work conveys a passing, a timelessness and of mans relationship with its historical and industrial past and present.

Robert Dick Bakery Schools: 18th and 19th November 2012

During October, November and December 2012 Caithness Horizons is working on an exciting project relating to our Robert Dick Collection with acclaimed Dunnet based Fibre Artist Joanne B. Kaar. The Museum has been awarded a grant under the "Iconic Artists in Iconic Places" scheme by Museums Galleries Scotland and Creative Scotland.
Robert Dick (January 1811 - 24th December 1866) moved to Thurso in 1830 and started in business as a baker. He spent his spare time exploring Caithness on foot studying the natural world. His botanical work has survived in the form of a unique Herbarium Collection of plants and mosses.

On 18th November from 2-4pm in the Cafe at Caithness Horizons Joanne and Museum staff will be running a "hands-on" Robert Dick bakery school for children aged 8-12 years old using 150 year old recipes. So kids come along and make something nice for Christmas.

On 19th November from 7-9pm adults can come along to the Cafe at Caithness Horizons and sample baking made from recipes that would have been widely used in Robert Dick's day and take away original 1850's recipes to try at home.

Admission to both workshops is free although donations are welcome. Pre-booking is essential.
