HARDY Wickers refused to let the relentless rain dampen their annual gala spirits and gave its opening attractions an enthusiastic welcome, last night.

The start to the event's 58th year will go down as one of the worst for weather, but nevertheless outstanding, for the loyal public response. Brollies and raincoats were necessities for the opener, but there was a weather window for the all-important crowning ceremony at Riverside car park.

The proceedings were introduced by gala committee chair, Donna Plowman, who extended a warm welcome to locals and visitors alike. Wickers, she said were noted for pulling together and the gala was no exception. Without the loyal support from the community, both financially and manpower, the gala would be unable to continue.

Mrs Plowman added: "I would also like to thank my committee members for all their hard work throughout the year and their efforts in putting together a programme for all ages. I hope you will come along and support gala week and have lots of fun and laughter."

The sentiment was echoed by this year's queen, Faith Harper after her crowning, and guest speaker, Deacon John Craw.

The coronation was barely concluded when the rain resumed. Crowds lined the street, however, giving the carnival procession of decorated floats, through the town, led by the Wick RBLS pipe band, a brolly good guard of honour.
The gala continued today, with a model show at Wick Assembly Rooms and the blessing of the fleet by the Rev. John Nugent. The festival's packed programme, tomorrow, includes sports competitions a dog show, talks a sea coast tour, entertainment at the Seaview residential home, finishing with a coffee evening, featuring majorettes and Highland dancers, back at the Assembly Rooms.
