Letter To Friends Of North Highland Connections

Dear Friend of North Highland Connections,

First of all, thank you to the new members who have signed up to our contact list, and to all our existing members.

September was a very busy and varied month for NHC. We had 'Young Artistes' programmes featuring two brilliant young string players, both with family links in the North Highlands. Violinist Amy Fields, accompanied by her father, Robert, gave a fine programme in Dornoch Cathedral, and repeated it in St Anne's, Thurso. The cellist Rowena Calvert, already firmly established on a major recital career, gave a lovely concert in the Drawing Room of Dunrobin Castle, accompanied by Alison Rhind (piano). We are grateful to Lord Strathnaver for the use of this magnificent venue, and for the remarkable support of the general manager, Scott Morrison.

We ended September with a truly remarkable performance of Paddy Cuneen's powerful drama, 'Fleeto'. The play has won enormous critical acclaim, and we are proud to have been able to bring this example of our partnership with Oran Mor, Glasgow, to the far north. The performance, in the hall of Wick High School, produced an audience of mainly under-thirty year olds. This was our first drama presentation, and we plan, in 2009, to work with Oran Mor to bring monthly drama productions to the region, starting in February.

October will also be dominated by drama, this time of a much more light-hearted type than the challenging and highly contemporary 'Fleeto'. The popular actor and entertainer, Dave Anderson, will feature in five performances of a new one-man piece, 'Mobile', written by Anderson and David Maclennan. Here is an introduction to whet your appetite :

A disgruntled ex-bank manager finds a mobile phone outside the wheelie-bin he has called home since his unexpected redundancy. He discovers that the phone belongs to the Chief Executive who 'early-retired' him from the bank in the first place. Using the phone with hilarious results, he gets his revenge by ruining the man's career, marriage and reputation. In the process, he manages to get sent to Paris all expenses paid and by helicopter. Once in Paris, living his 'dream come true' life-style, he starts to find that his lifestyle might only be a dream...

We are taking this to venues away from the main population centres: an example of our determination to take the Arts far and wide in our region. Please note the venues, and aim to attend at a venue near you....
