Highland 2007, the year Scotland celebrates Highland culture, will be the focus of a debate at the Festival of Politics in the Scottish Parliament later this week (Thursday 24 August).

The Festival of Politics is a ground-breaking addition to Edinburgh's Festival calendar where the politics of Scotland and the wider world are explored in lively and informal sessions.

Highland 2007 board member Colin Marr, director of Eden Court Theatre and Bryan Beattie, the Highland-based former adviser on culture to the Scottish Executive, will discuss the role of culture in the development of the Highlands at the 'Highland 2007: Banking on Our Cultural Currency' event.

2007 promises to be a special year for the Highlands of Scotland. Hundreds of events and activities will take place celebrating Highland culture in villages, towns and cities across the Highlands and beyond. Join the discussion between 2-3pm on Thursday 24 at the Scottish Parliament, venue 3. The event is free with tickets available at the
Parliament on the day.

The 'Highland 2007: Banking on Our Cultural Currency' event will also feature music from twins Mike and Ali Vass, at 22 years old, two of the best young exponents of traditional music in Scotland. Hailing from Nairn, Mike and Ali play a varied mix of traditional and contemporary tunes on fiddle and piano, including footstompin' jigs and reels bursting with energy, drive and vitality.

Alison Magee, chair of Highland 2007, said: "I would strongly recommend anyone who can attend this event go along and join in what I'm sure will be a lively and interesting debate with some great Highland music.

"Highland 2007 will be a fantastic year celebrating our rich and unique culture in the Highlands. However we also need to look further ahead and debates like this will help to shape the future development of the Highlands and the important part culture can and should play."

Drama, music, debate, famous faces and a world class photography exhibition will all be found at the Festival of Politics, which runs from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 August. For more information and a full programme visit www.festivalofpolitics.org.uk
