Caithness Horizons: Year of Ancient Ancestors Festival 2014

Scotland welcomes the world for the Year of Homecoming 2014.
Homecoming Scotland 2014 offers a year-long programme of events celebrating the very best of Scotland’s food and drink, our fantastic active and natural resources as well as our creativity, culture and ancestral heritage. Homecoming Scotland 2014 will position Scotland on the international stage as a dynamic and creative nation.
To celebrate and promote the unique Pictish and Norse heritage of the Far North of Scotland Caithness Horizons Museum in Thurso has received funding from Museums Galleries Scotland, The Robertson Trust and the Highland Council to develop a new Early Medieval Sculpture exhibition. The exhibition will be the centrepiece of the Museum’s Year of Ancient Ancestors Festival as part of the Scotland-wide Homecoming 2014 celebrations.
The Museum has received funding from EventScotland, the Caithness and North Sutherland Fund, The Highland Council - Highland Culture Fund and Museums Galleries Scotland to run a year long programme of living history events that will bring the Far North’s Pictish and Norse heritage to life.
The Pictish element of the Year of Ancient Ancestors Festival will run from 15th – 18th May and will include special events such as storytelling, a one-off performance by Thurso Players Juniors, talks and art workshops.
From 5th – 13th July the Museum will be going Viking mad with storytelling, arts and craft workshops and a Viking living history encampment and battles run by Glasgow Vikings.
During the weekend of the 24th – 25th October the Museum will be running a Norse themed “Vetrablot” or harvest festival event.

Debbie Lee An exhibition of textile art celebrating the special landscape along the north coast route from John O‘Groats to Ullapool ‘Throughout Scotland there are sign posts to direct travellers, ‘tourists', off the main route and onto an ‘Alternative Tourist Route'. The sign at John O’ Groats directing people to Ullapool using the north coast is both inspiring and to me amusing.

Caithness Horizons Museum welcomes half a million visitors
Tuesday 11th August saw local group No Limits Caithness visit the Museum for a morning packed with Viking activities with Curator Joanne Howdle, or Thordis EirÃksdóttir as she is fondly known to local groups and schools. The group helped the Museum to hit the half million visitors mark and to celebrate they were presented with a special cake made in the Museum's cafe.

Caithness Horizons in Thurso has secured Museum Accreditation for the next three years. The award is made by Museums Galleries Scotland and Arts Council England under the 2011 Museum Accreditation Standard.
